The Sugar-Free Kitchen Review

The Sugar-Free Kitchen is a simple cookbook with recipes that drives towards eating a cleaner, healthier diet. It offers a range of exciting recipes to help reduce or eliminate sugar from your diet while still being tasty and delicious.

The cookbook is also very informative. It explains how both refined and natural sugar affects the body, how it has snuck into our food, the health benefits of eating more quality protein, wholefoods and good fats and much more.

It has certainly enlightened me. I was always very curious about the alternatives for sugar for diabetics. Both my parents suffered from diabetes which I will likely inherit in future. So I should watch my intake of sugar especially as I love sugary food!

The book will be released on 3rd November 2014 and is published by Parragon Books Ltd. The book is paperback containing about 128 pages. It comes with six chapters: introduction, breakfasts, lunch & snacks, mains, desserts & baking and index. It is easy to navigate through the book for recipe ideas. Each recipe comes with clear instructions, beautiful photos and nutritional information per serving (calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugars, salt, fibre and protein).

This half term has come thick and fast and we are already past hump day! To keep us busy this half term, we did a Halloween challenge with Warburtons! We have received a range of Warburtons goodies along with some spooky Halloween themed props to get both children to be as creative as possible!

Night in with Santa Maria

Last week, we enjoyed an hour of extra sleep and at the same time, we also had an extra-long night in together. We all love a lazy Sunday and we like to spend it by watching a film. So, last Sunday, we had a perfect Mexican feast watching family-friendly film Spirited Away. Spirited Away is one of my favourite Japanese cartoon movies and there’s always a sense of nostalgia whenever I introduce my children to the movies I used to watch.

Santa Maria (previously known as Discovery Foods) had kindly sent me their fajita kit to enjoy a quick and easy family night in. Inside this fantastic box, there were two flavours of fajita seasoning mix packets – hot and mild, a jar of green jalapenos, a bottle of soured cream topping, a bottle of salsa, onion & garlic dip, a packet of nacho rolls and their plain soft tortillas.

Soy, Honey and Mustard Salmon

This winter, Kikkoman is challenging bloggers to create an innovative, tasty ‘one pot’ or ‘one pan’ recipe using Kikkoman’s famed naturally brewed soy sauce. Kikkoman Soy Sauce is much more than a stir fry or sushi sauce. It is also a fantastic universal seasoning for all kinds of dishes like soup or roasted chicken or soya sauce chicken. Kikkoman is made with four pure ingredients – soybeans, wheat, salt and water. It is slowly brewed for several months.

9bar Breakfast Energy Boost Review

The first time I came across 9bar was when I visited their stall at the Good Food show and I instantly fell in love with their Original and Peanut bars. They are packed full of delicious seeds, nuts and a thin layer of chocolate! They are flavoursome and so easy to eat. They are not too hard nor are they too dry.

Early April, they have launched the deliciously moist & chewy wholefood 9bar Breakfast, available in four mouth-watering flavours. 9bar Breakfast is a convenient, nutritious breakfast alternative with the right mix of carbs and protein to provide the slow release energy you need to get through the morning rush hour. They are gluten and wheat free.

Halloween Zombie Fingers

Halloween is coming soon. Have you thought of what you are going to bake? If not, why not try baking these Zombie fingers. I am not a professional baker, but just an enthusiastic amateur baker. I believe you could bake better fingers than me. This is a recipe from Patsie Cheong, One Day One Dish book which I bought while in Singapore. I have altered the recipe slightly to suit the Halloween theme.

Hundreds and Thousands Mini Cake

This is a recipe from One Day One Dish book by SeaShore publishers which I bought when we were in Singapore. In the book, the recipe is called Chocolate Rice Sprinkle but instead I replaced the chocolate rice with Hundreds and Thousands.

Simply Granola Bread

Making your own bread? Why not try adding granola, dates and walnuts or olives? Making bread can be so much fun! We have received a packet of Jordans Simply Granola crunchy baked oats with a hint of honey to try which is available to buy in Waitrose and Tesco at RRP £2.69 for 750g.

Mini Egg Tarts

Egg tarts are one of my husbands favourite Chinese desserts. We always buy it from the Chinese supermarket. So I decided to bake some. This is my second attempt. The first bake didn’t turn out great. I used ready-made mini tarts from Tesco instead of making my own.

Almond & Sunflower Seed Tuiles

This is another recipe from The Secret of Cookies by Gu Huixue. In her book she has a recipe to bake almond tuiles. Instead of using all almond flakes, I am using a mix of sunflower seeds and almond flakes. Also one of the ingredients is cake flour which I replaced with plain flour.

White Lotus Sandwich Cookies

This week I decided to adapt a recipe from The Secret of Cookies by Gu Huixue and bake White Lotus Sandwich Cookies. Instead of using black dates, I am using the leftover white lotus paste I had from the Swiss Roll Snow Skin mooncake and Colourful Snow Skin mooncake. Also one of the ingredients is cake flour which I replaced with plain flour and a few other alterations.
