Orchard Toy Pirate Race Game Review

11 March 2014 by Eileen

Pirate Race Game is another exciting new release for 2014 by Orchard Toys!  This is a memory and matching game, where players travel around the island, matching cards to build a pirate picture, before racing to the middle of the island to capture the Pirates’ treasure.

Orchard Toys Pirate Race Game

It is suitable for age 3 plus.  It can be played with 2 – 4 players.

Inside the box, it contains:

  • 1 jigged playing board
  • 24 pirate cards
  • 4 pirate playing pieces with stands
  • 1 dice
  • 1 instruction leaflet

The cards are made from thick recycled cupboard, are easy to hold, have smooth edges and are bright and colourful.  The playing board is made up of 4 jigged pieces and very easy to piece together by both children.  The playing board is quite large so make sure you have plenty of table space.

How to play the game:

Shuffle all the pirate cards and spread out face down on the table so the coloured spots can be seen.  When we played with three players, we took a set of puzzle out, just to avoid confusing the children.  But if they like a challenge, then don’t remove it.

The youngest player starts and move around the board in a clockwise direction.  Each time you land on a coloured spot, you may pick up a card that matches the coloured spot.  If the card doesn’t match your pirate then put back the cards.  If you land on a red cross, you may pick up any one of the coloured spot cards.

This can be quite a quick game if only played with two players.  Both of children were thrilled each time someone revealed their cards and were very eager to complete their puzzle and get into the Pirates’ treasure.

This game retails at £9.50 which we think is good value for money as it helps to develop colour recognition and matching skills.  I give it a rating of 4 stars out of 5.  This is a fun game for younger children and they are great when you have a pirate theme birthday party.

I was torn between this and the rockets and comet game at Toy Fair, think this may well end up on a Birthday list later in the year

I really liked this game when I saw it at Toy Fair, it’s a really inventive take on a board game.

Sometimes these games that can be played quickly are good and really have their place

This looks like another great Orchard Toys game and definitely one my son would enjoy.
