Medical Mysteries Board Game Review

30 June 2024 by Eileen

Medical Mysteries the New York Emergency Room is a story-driven cooperative board game where everyone works together to help the patients survive the night. This is a brand new 2024 board game from Tomy Toys.

This game is inspired by popular medical dramas and has been developed and tested with the help of medical specialists. It is suitable for ages 14 and onwards and for one to four players.

Inside this box, it contains four patient envelopes, a tutorial envelope and a codes/research/rules envelope. Each patient envelope includes an electronic medical record, intake interview, story card, status card, patient form and epilogue sheet. The tutorial envelope contains Nurse Judy’s tutorial, a sample of the electronic medical record, an intake interview, 14 story cards, 2 status cards, a patient form and an epilogue sheet. Inside the codes/research/rules envelope, it contains a result codes booklet, 5 research sheets and a rules folder.

It is best to start with the tutorial before getting on the first patient. It will help you to understand how to use the information to examine the patients and work out a diagnosis for your patient. There are clues to follow, tests to run and you can consult the specialists to diagnose the conditions. There are Research Sheets provided that details possible conditions your patient might have, and additional information will unfold as you start treating the patient. Try to gather more information by running tests and consulting specialists as you narrow down the options.

There are three levels of difficulty: easy, medium and hard. Patient 1 is easy, Patients 2 and 3 are medium and Patient 4 is hard.

I used to work as a nurse and find this very interesting to play and quite easy for me to diagnose. It was great fun watching my teenagers work hard to find the clue. The storyline is easy to follow and instructions are clear. It kind of reminds me of the Choose Your Path stories I used to read as following the result codes, can lead to different storylines.

Personally, I do enjoy playing this game. This game is like the escape room concept, looking for clues to help the patient survive the night. This game is available to buy from Smyths and Amazon.

Disclosure: I received this board game through ComeRoundUK (June 2024) for free.
