Mario Party: Star Rush Review

25 October 2016 by Eileen

The new Mario Party: Star Rush was launched on 7th October 2016 on Nintendo 3DS and we were thrilled to join many others in playing it.  We are massive fans of the Mario games in this household!  Both children were even more excited when they found out their favourite YouTuber DanTDM is also playing Nintendo games.

There are more than 50 mini games and 8 gameplay modes which will keep players entertained!  In the plaza/main screen, there are Toad Scramble, Cainathlon, Balloon Bash, Rhythm Recital, Mini games and Character Museum to choose from.

Star Rush is basically a game for you to earn points, build your Party Level and unlock new modes.  The game’s basic mode is the Toad Scramble where all players roll their dice and battle to collect coins and rescue Stars stolen by Bowser’s forces.  Each player plays as a differently-coloured Toad. There are five worlds to choose from and each world has three parts to play with.  There is plenty of strategy and zero downtime which is perfect for portable multiplayer fun!  We do find the worlds really fun to play with a lot to explore!

The Coinathlon is a frenetic multiplayer mini game race to collect the most coins.  First you pick your character or you can use a compatible amiibo to play with a rival or free play.  There are three mini games to play and once you complete the game, you will level up and go onto the next level. I love that each time you play, the mini games are different.  In the game, sometime you earn items and you can use it to slow down your rivals!

In Balloon Bash, you will need to burst Coin Balloons, play mini games and boss Battles.  Rhythm Recital is another great game where you play your instruments and gain points to level up!  Besides these multiplayer modes, the Challenge Tower mode is a single player mode where players need to edge their way up a tower. Pay attention to the colour of each space and avoid danger as you ascend.

This game is compatible with amiibo and they’ll appear as a support character from the start, with a rare item too! And if your amiibo has save data from Mario Party 10 on Wii U, you can get another special die too!

For multiplayer, if only one person owns the game, a limited number of modes are available via Download Play.  Players who don’t own it can download the free Mario Party: Star Rush – Party Guest software to join in some multiplayer games

Overall we love the mini games and the challenges we were set.  It is very easy to play and has great music!  I think it’s great in 3D mode too!  I would highly recommend it! Read more about it here: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-3DS/Mario-Party-Star-Rush-1114009.html
