Kärcher Steam Cleaner SC3 Review

10 August 2015 by Eileen

Have you ever thought about the benefits of a steam cleaner? Did you know that steam kills bacteria and it leaves no toxic residue on surfaces? It is 100% chemical-free, safe and a cost effective way to disinfect your house.

This Kärcher Steam Cleaner SC3 comes with three different tools to help to clean your home from floor to wall tiles. This allergy-friendly cleaning device has what it takes to make light work of the jobs which can take hours with any other cleaning equipment.

The package comes with:

  • SC3 with three running wheels
  • Descaler cartridge
  • Detail nozzle with round brush
  • Hand nozzle with Terry cloth cover
  • Floor nozzle with Terry floor cloth
  • 2 Extension tubes

It is very straightforward to set it all up. Please watch my video where I demonstrate how it work: https://youtu.be/sTGJZ58tyxw

This steam cleaner comes with two variable steams (maximum or reduced steam volume) and no steam (child lock) which can be controlled on the switch of the steam hose gun. The switch is quite stiff to at the moment so I’m having to use two hands but that may be because it is new.

The SC3 comes with a descaler cartridge which provides automatic and effective descaling and is one of the differentiators over the SC2 (the SC2 uses descaler sticks). This helps to extend the service life of the device. The device will automatically warn you when the descaler cartridges needs to be changed.

To use, simply slot the cartridge into the water tank and pour in 1 litre of water (maximum). Wait for 30 seconds and it is ready to use. A tip to note is that always flush the steam through near a sink before use as steam discharge is unsteady at first and water will exit through.

The generous four and a half metre cable allows me to work around a big room without having me to unplug or use an extension cable. The one litre water capacity is good for about 30-50 minutes of use (depending on what you use it on). It covers a lot of surface areas. I would suggest filling the cleaner with a jug as opposed to filling straight from the tap. I would recommend emptying the device of unused water if you are not planning on using it regularly.

It comes with a two metre long hose with two extension tubes which allows me to reach difficult to reach area. I love that it heats up quickly. According to the manufacturer, it takes just 30 seconds. I didn’t get a stopwatch to time it, but that sounds about right from my experience – I love how quickly I can get going with my cleaning! The steam output is very consistent but not always smooth. It does get quite wet on a hard floor so try to work as fast as you can! Also wear a clean pair of slippers too. I had worn an old pair of slippers and managed to get dirty stains on the floor after cleaning it.

The lightness of the steam hose gun is a pleasure to use. It makes cleaning so easy and doesn’t tire you out. The steam cleaner itself is lightweight and manoeuvrable too. The steam hose does get quite warm so be careful while working around younger children.

I find that inserting the terry cloth into the floor nozzle is not very easy and quite clumsy. In particular, the holding clamps are not easy to clip on. Also, using for a period of time, the cloth does become slack and I find it difficult to place it back properly without hurting my hands. So I just resort to using it with slack cloth until the end!

Overall I am very pleased with the steam cleaner. It is quick to start up, has a long cable, is easy to swap accessories, has a big water tank capacity, lightweight and is very manoeuvrable! It is shame that this is not to be used on carpet as the floor nozzle does not manoeuvre on carpet. It works well on floor, bathroom, windows, mirror, extractor hood and hobs. You can even use it to steam your clothes too! They are available to buy online, Amazon and other good retailers.
