10 Ideas To Design A Modern Garden

15 May 2024 by Eileen

If you want to get your garden ready for summer, you need to start as soon as possible. But people have different ideas about how to make their garden look perfect. They worry about it matching their home or doing too much or even too little, so it feels like there’s always something missing.

10 Ideas To Design A Modern Garden

You can also upgrade your garden and bring a modern style that will make it easier to manage and look amazing. So how can you design a modern garden? Like everything, you need to start with an idea, so here are some great ideas to take your home to the next level.

Pick a Style That Complements Your Property

It can be tricky to design a modern garden for a traditional home since these are two vastly different approaches. However, your garden doesn’t need to match the property completely. Instead, you need to make sure it complements what you have already.

Start by considering the colour scheme. You can complement red brick buildings with darker fences to make the space feel more intimate. Another idea is to design your garden in a gradient, meaning the space immediately outside your patio is more traditional, but the garden becomes more modern the further down to the boundary line.

Work With Your Space

Some people have large gardens, others need to work with a smaller square footage. This issue can be challenging but it isn’t impossible. When designing a modern garden, focus on what you want most from it as it can make things easier to design.

You know you need outdoor seating and decorations, so prioritise these additions while planning. Once you have ticked these two off, work with the rest of the space to make it more appealing to modern preferences.

Create Sections

While more traditional gardens use an open space that offers the illusion of freedom, a modern garden maximises sections to make the design easier to manage. By creating sections, such as seating and entertainment, cooking, play, and décor, it won’t just be easier to plan your new garden. It gives everyone the chance to enjoy various parts without feeling overwhelmed.

Set Up A Social Spot

The social spot is crucial for any modern garden. You can install a fire pit near the bottom of the garden that’s perfect for those late-night chats with your nearest and dearest. Another option is a play area for kids, complete with a swing set or jungle gym. These additions make your garden more than something that’s simply nice to look at. They give the garden purpose and give people a reason to stop by, even if it’s just for a casual drink on a Saturday afternoon.

Think About Entertaining

You can also consider how you want to entertain your guests. If you love hosting BBQs, you can build an outdoor kitchen with everything you need to host. There should be space for a BBQ or even a built-in grill station. This section should be close to the patio so it’s easier to go in and out with food and drinks. Finish the area by purchasing a large (or adjustable) table to seat everyone.

Use It All Night Long

Although you don’t stay up as late as you used to back in the day, you can still capture those carefree days of your youth by being able to use your garden all night long. Installing garden lighting in the social spots can make your garden and patio area more versatile so you can spend evenings outside much earlier than usual as long as the weather behaves. And if the temperatures drop a little low bring out a patio heater to keep the conversation going a little longer.

Use Modern Materials

Modern aesthetics require modern materials. Many garden designers use bamboo and other sustainable materials to line their flower beds or garden paths as it creates a natural contemporary style and serves its function. Similarly, river stones are a fantastic addition that can enhance any area, giving you plenty of options when upgrading your garden to something more modern and appealing.

Choose The Colours Wisely

From bold and beautiful plants to white walls, choosing the right colours will have a significant impact on how modern your garden looks. The bold plants are perfect for grabbing attention, while white walls will reflect the sunlight better, making your garden look brighter for longer. If you prefer privacy, large hedges can also help but you need to combine them with other lighting and colour options to maximise your time spent outside.

Install Water Features

Everyone loves a water feature, so installing one in your garden combines the best of the sophisticated traditional style with a modern flair that can add the finishing touches. You probably can’t fit an extravagant fountain in the centre of your garden, but a small babbling brook-style feature would be ideal for the far end of the garden. Another option could be a small self-built pond that adds something unique and can benefit the local wildlife. Whatever type of water feature you choose, you can enhance your garden and include something that few people use.

Make It Easy To Navigate

While wild gardens full of plants, trees, and flowers can look good, they can also be difficult to manage and stressful to navigate. Instead, lay a garden path that makes your garden easy to get around. This idea can help with your sections and means you can wander up, down, and around your garden easily. Furthermore, the path can reduce the amount of grass in your garden so you don’t have to mow the lawn as often, giving you a convenient solution.

Modern Garden

Modern gardens don’t need harsh colours or minimalist styles. You can achieve a modern garden by using traditional inspirations with a contemporary twist. If you’re struggling with garden ideas, these tips can help you decide which works best for you to make the most of your outdoor space and create a spot for your friends and family to relax and reconnect on those wonderful summer nights.
