Most people want to get healthier, but they often think that there is always a tomorrow! Now, it is time to change that. Don’t wait until tomorrow to make it happen. As we are heading towards the end of 2021 and not rid of this pandemic, we can all take steps to look after our health properly. Stop finding any excuses. You can start now, whether you are very young or old.
Since the pandemic, we have seen a lot of people suffer from serious respiratory complications, hospitalization, and even death. This is because we always take our lungs for granted and don’t always think about them! Our body has a defence to protect our lungs but there are some important steps you can take to care for your lungs.
Don’t Smoke!
If you are a smoker, it is never too late to quit. Also, avoid being a second-hand smoker. Smoking destroys lung tissue and may cause cancer.
Sing!
Did you know that singing helps to improve your posture to help you breathe more efficiently? Not only that, but it also teaches you to control your breathing and can help with your mental health too! Not everyone has a powerful and technically skilled vocal like Celine Dion or opera singer Luciano Pavarotti! But you don’t have to have a great voice to sing! Simply join a singing group and get your lungs exercised!
Try to Minimize Outdoor Air Pollution
Not everyone can afford to retire or work in countryside areas. However, try to avoid travelling at times when there is lots of traffic. Many councils are working on cleaner air especially in the city centre. Recently, Birmingham City Council introduced Clean Air Zone charges to improve air quality and discourage heavy polluting vehicles from entering the zone.
Avoid Exposure to Pollutants at Home/Workplace
Clean your home regularly by dusting and vacuuming at least once a week. Use natural cleaning products. Open your windows to increase air ventilation especially in your bathroom too. You don’t want to encourage mould to grow especially around the grout area. Also clean your fans, exhaust hoods and other ventilation throughout your home to get rid of those nasty pollutants.
Exercise
Getting regular exercise is probably the best thing you can do for the health of your lungs. It doesn’t have to be exercising in the gym or a long jog. A simple brisk walk can help keep your lungs healthy.
Breathe Deep
Now you can get help from the POWERbreathe Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) tool. Whether you are a patient with respiratory illness or healthy people, you can try POWERbreathe breathing trainer. It is a multifunctional inspiratory muscle training tool that targets your main breathing muscle, the diaphragm.
It uses the principles of resistance training to improve the strength and stamina of your inspiratory muscles and reducing fatigue. It is drug-free, scientifically-proven and has no side effects or drug interactions. Also, because the cardiovascular strain of POWERbreathe IMT is very low, it is suitable for even the most physically compromised patients.
Furthermore, a recommendation from the World Health Organisation (WHO) for COVID recovery in the clinical management of COVID, includes increasing exercise and fitness with Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT), such as POWERbreathe.
Prevent Infection
As I’m sure you all know how COVID is transmitted, this can become very serious. There are many ways to protect yourself. Remember Hands. Face. Space. Wash your hands, cover your face and make space! Use hand gel if you can not wash.
Get vaccinated every year against influenza. If you get sick, isolate yourself to protect the people around you. Stay home from work or school until you are feeling better.
Get Check-ups
If in doubt, get help from your GP. If possible, get regular check-ups when you are in your 40s.
