Dixit Game Review

25 December 2017 by Eileen

Dixit is a simple and fun story telling game for families, which challenges everyone to be as creative as they can! Each player takes it in turn to be the storyteller and gives a clue without revealing the real picture of the card. This is suitable for aged eight and above, for three to six players.

In this game, the inside the box itself is the scoring game board. The middle of the box is a square hole to store the 84 cards, 36 voting tokens and 6 wooden rabbits play pieces.

dixit game cards

To play this game, each player is given six cards, one rabbit play piece to place on the scoring game board and voting tokens (the quantity depends on how many people are playing).

Choose one player to be the storyteller and he/she makes up a sentence of their own story. Each other player selects the card in their hands which best matches the sentence and gives the selected card to the storyteller, without showing it to the others. The storyteller shuffles his/her card with all the received cards. These are then placed picture face up and every player has to bet upon which picture was the storyteller’s.

If nobody or everybody finds the correct card, the storyteller scores 0, and each of the other players scores 2 and move their rabbits accordingly. Otherwise the storyteller and whoever found the correct answer scores 3. Players score 1 point for every vote for their own card. The game ends when the deck is empty or if a player scores 30 points. In either case, the player with the most points wins the game.

Dixit is a straightforward game to play and we all had fun playing it. We do find it very challenging to make up sentences without revealing the real picture! A few of us struggled to make a good story so I think this is a great game to get everyone thinking. It helps promote creative thinking and imagination. We all learnt from each other’s storytelling and were inspired to be better each time. It is available to buy at £29.99 from Esdevium store finder or Amazon.
