Winter Gardening

15 November 2017 by Eileen

Winter Gardening

Hopefully, you’ve been maintaining and enjoying your garden throughout the summer and you may be thinking that now that it’s November, you can relax. However, there are still plenty to do! Here’s a checklist of jobs for your garden:

Winter Gardening

  • If’s it been quite mild and your grass is still growing, you can continue to mow the lawn if it’s dry but raise the height of the mower blades. We gave ours a cut just last week with our Ryobi lawnmower. This mower has really made mowing the lawn so easy because it is cordless combined with the powerful motor.

  • Protect your plants and vegetables from freezing. If you have containers with all-year-round shrubs, use bubble wrap to wrap them or take them into a shelter. Wrap the leaves around any cauliflower curds and secure with string.

  • Use netting to protect brassicas from birds. If you’re working outside all day then you might want to consider getting suitable winter clothing. Clothing should be waterproof, windproof and breathable to keep you warm. Engelbert Strauss offers a wide range of functional safety wear and personal protection suitable for outdoor activities.

  • New deciduous hedging plants such as beech, hawthorn, field maple and hornbeam can be planted, but make sure they are planted with plenty of compost. Trees can be planted too but they need to be well staked into the ground to prevent movement of the roots in high winds. Visit your local garden centre for plants and compost. We love to visit Planters near us which is a fabulous day out especially because of the Sky Trail adventure for the kids.

  • Check fence posts, gates, sheds and greenhouses are secure and if not, mend them or replace them before the winter weather really takes hold.

  • Insulate any outdoor taps. You can buy specific insulating tap covers, but bubble wrap can work just as well.

  • Rake off all the leaves from your lawn. Try to avoid walking on the lawn though if it is wet or frozen as this can ruin the grass.
  • Give your decking and patio a sweep and clean with a jet-wash if you have one to remove any slimy patches. Our Karcher K4 Pressure Washer has been serving us really well. We’ve been using it clean some of our tools too, but make sure to dry any metal tools which might corrode.

  • Order seed catalogues and begin planning for next regarding what and where you want to grow.

So have you started your winter gardening yet? Don’t wait for too long otherwise the harsh winter might ruin your garden!
