Pick Up Sticks Game

22 July 2015 by Eileen

Along with other bloggers this week, I have decided to make a series of stick crafts from using popsicles to twigs. I have made a game from my childhood which is the pick up sticks game! I used to play that with my friends in school and I thought it would be nice to pass it down to my children too.

To make this craft, you will need:

  • 30 BBQ sticks, with the sharp ends trimmed off
  • Coloured threads
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue

Method:

  1. Make sure all the sticks’ sharp ends are trimmed and free from splinters.
  2. Ask your child to tie a knot with a coloured thread and go around the stick. Then use the hot glue to seal the end of the thread. Repeat this for the rest of the sticks. If you don’t have thread, you could just colour both ends of the sticks!

Now you are ready to play! The object of this game is to pick up the most sticks. To begin the game, gather the bundle of sticks and randomly release so that they end up in a tangled pile. The players have to attempt to remove a single stick, without moving any other stick. Players who successfully pick up a stick can then have another turn. Keep removing sticks until you cause another stick to move. The game is over when the last stick is removed.

Hope you like this craft! Do pop by to check out the rest of the bloggers’s #simplecrafts!
