Chinese New Year Traditions
Ever since I moved to the UK for work, I’ve found it difficult to keep up with or properly observe the Chinese New Year traditions my mum used to teach me. Part of it is because I’ve forgotten what it was like, as I haven’t been back to Singapore during this festive period for eight years. Another part is that I like to think of myself as a modern woman who doesn’t need to follow every superstitious rule.
Chinese New Year with LEGO
As Chinese New Year – The Year of Monkey is approaching, I can’t help thinking what to do next for this year’s theme! Today, I am using LEGO to build me auspicious Chinese New Year words. It is 大吉大利 which means I wish you happiness, luck and wealth. I do have limited LEGO so I am building 大吉 which represents almost the same meaning!

Happy New Year to everyone! I have made this Chinese New Year Pineapple Craft. It is almost the time of the year for Chinese to celebrate our Chinese New Year! This coming lunar year is the Fire Monkey. If you are in Asia or UK Chinatown, you would have probably seen lot of colourful, vibrant decorations.

Year of the Goat Wooden Spoon Craft
Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐 Saying bye bye to the Brother Horse and welcoming the Year of the gentle Goat/Sheep. This year, we have been making a lot of sheep crafts. Miaomiao’s Chinese New Year Review
As a Chinese family living in the UK, it can be easy to lose touch of Chinese culture especially during the Chinese New Year times. So it is very important for us to teach and enlighten our children on our Chinese culture. Each year when it is near CNY, I would teach my children CNY crafts and also the story/meaning behind it. I am really pleased to come across this app called Miaomiao’s Chinese New Year (iTunes £2.29).
Stapleless Chinese New Year Lantern
In these coming months, I will be partnering with a few major retailers for the National Stationery Week (27 April – 3 May 2015) to get Britain writing, and to focus on the importance of handwriting.

Celebrating Chinese New Year with Balloon Time
Next week Thursday 19th February is the first day of Chinese New Year and also happens to be half term so we won’t have a Chinese club lesson next week. Therefore, we had our CNY party a week early to celebrate with all the children and parents.

Peanut Cookies
Peanut cookies are one of my favourite snacks to eat during Chinese New Year. Normally we will buy them from shops in Singapore but now living in the UK, it is impossible unless I buy them from Chinatown. So I decided to make it myself using the recipe book given to me by my aunty.
The first obstacle I found to making this recipe was trying to buy roasted peanuts without added salt. In the end I bought raw peanuts and made everything from scratch. You can usually find packets of raw peanuts in the health food aisle of a supermarket. To make roasted peanuts, I chopped the raw peanuts in a blender and roasted them in the oven at 160°C for 15 minutes. I stirred the peanuts every 5 minutes of baking.
