How To Make Your House A Cool & Relaxing Place This Summer

13 April 2023 by Eileen

Warm temperatures, beautiful blue skies, barbecues, and spending lots of time outdoors. Those are just some things everyone can look forward to as the summer season makes an appearance!

Unfortunately, there are some things to dislike about the summer as well, such as unbearably hot indoor temperatures, humidity, and increased electricity costs due to running air conditioners 24/7.

You’re likely reading this blog post today because you want to prepare your house for the summer. But you want those warmer months to be delightful.

How To Make Your House A Cool & Relaxing Place This Summer

Take a look at these handy hints and tips to keep your home cool and comfortable all summer long:

Upgrade Your Home’s Energy Efficiency

It makes sense to improve your home’s energy efficiency (where necessary) to keep indoor temperatures cool and comfortable. Start by ensuring you’ve got energy-efficient doors and windows installed.

uPVC (double or triple-glazed) doors and windows reduce heat convection, resulting in a warmer home in winter and a cooler one in the summer. Such an improvement to your house will also lower your energy bills as you won’t need to use fans and air conditioners so much.

Make Good Use Of Natural Light

All electric light sources, even LEDs, generate some heat. If you tend to turn the lights on at home during the day, look for ways to add more natural light to your rooms.

For example, installing sun tunnels through your home’s roof can flood rooms underneath with natural light – even if you keep the curtains closed.

Taking advantage of natural light and controlling how much you let into each room will help you have a cooler and brighter house during the summer.

Don’t Make Your Home Inviting For Unwanted Pests

Uninvited guests like mosquitoes, flies, and ants can be a real problem during warmer weather, resulting in an uncomfortable experience for all householders.

That’s why you should take appropriate pest control steps. Examples include:

  • Ensuring your home is clean and clutter-free, with no crumbs or food debris left around for insects to enjoy;
  • Sealing any cracks in your walls and ceilings;
  • Use natural pest deterrents like essential oils or edible plants like basil.

Use Fans and Air Conditioners Strategically

Despite your best efforts, you’ll still need some help from fans and air conditioners. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on your energy bills as a result!

One example is using a ceiling fan with an air conditioner to circulate the cold air to other rooms on the same floor. Another is to keep windows, doors, and curtains closed and use fans and air conditioners when necessary and ensure your ceiling fan installation is correct.

Know When To Keep Your Curtains Closed

How long should you keep your curtains closed each day? You only need to keep them closed when the sun directly shines into a room and at night time! Consider buying some blackout curtains for maximum impact.

Embrace A Self-Sufficient Attitude At Home

A cool and relaxing home can be just as much about your mindset as it is about temperature and atmosphere. By embracing self-sufficiency, for instance, you can create a calmer and more rewarding environment around you. Becoming more self-sufficient means learning to mend rather than replace. It means growing your own food. It’s about being proactive instead of reacting to the events around you. These small actions will all add up and help you reduce dependence on the outside. By heading online and looking at sources like Nigermany, you could learn plenty about self-sufficient lifestyles and inspire others in this way. Becoming more resourceful allows you to turn your home into a place with more comfort and independence.

By following the above tips and tricks, you will soon start enjoying more relaxed, comfortable, and pest-free days and nights in the summer!
