You Can Call Crossy Road My New Online Game Addiction!
As most of you know, I have been a huge fan of Poki for quite some time. Their games have helped me de-stress on more than one occasion, and they are fun for everyone. That said, Crossy Road is a web game that Poki suggested and I just had to play. And you know what? I would totally call Crossy Road my new online game addiction!

The Technical Stuff
Aside from simply playing the game, I learned a good bit about the origins of Crossy Road. Why? Because it seems interesting—and I wasn’t disappointed. Crossy Road was developed by Hipster Whale, an Australia-based game studio, and the game first launched as a mobile app in 2014. These creative gamers had no idea that the game would go viral, so you can imagine that has been a pleasant surprise.
Going strong 4 years later, Crossy Road has become a sensation with gamers of all ages—both leisure and hardcore. Additionally, while the game is available across multiple platforms, Poki is the exclusive publisher of Crossy Road on the web. Ergo, you should check Crossy Road out here.
First Impressions Aren’t Always Accurate…
I can usually look at a video game, either on a console, on a mobile app, or on the web, and tell you if I would like it. And my impression has been spot-on more often than not, so I thought I had Crossy Road pinned as a simple, kind-of basic, but cutesy-fun game that would pose no challenges. This game was totally the exception to my first impressions.
While Crossy Road LOOKS simple and basic, it’s actually a challenging and endless game of survival alongside a blocky, clucky chicken. Silly? Maybe in design, but the concept and gameplay sent me for a loop or two. Your keyboard is essential to Crossy Road’s gameplay. The arrow keys are your forwards, backwards, and side to side movers, while the spacebar rolls the prize machine [more on that later]. Or, you can use your mouse to click the keyboard symbols that appear on the game screen.
If I had to compare Crossy Road to another game, it would be Frogger. You know, the old-school classic about a hoppy toad that braves the hustle and bustle of highway traffic to get where he wants to go. This game is kind-of like that, but endless, so your main objective is to survive for as long as possible. I loved Frogger when I was a kid, so I think that attributes to my love of Crossy Road now. In Crossy Road, your chicken jumps across traffic-packed highways, log-laden rivers, and train tracks—all to get to the other side, over and over again. There’s nothing quite as awesome as those old-fashioned, arcade-style games to remind you of your childhood.
What I LOVED About This Game
There is SO much to love about the Crossy Road game! For one, the controls are simple, and it takes less than a minute to figure out what you’re supposed to do. You earn points for every move ahead that you make, so all you have to do is survive and keep on clucking forward. There are coins everywhere, which you can collect towards a free gift when your poor chicken meets an untimely demise. The points, however, go towards the prize machine, where you can roll to unlock a new character, like Rusty Robot, Mallard Duck, or Lucky Cat.
Sure, it’s fun playing as a curious chicken, but the best thing about unlocking characters is learning and perfecting their abilities. For instance, where your chicken is a classic character with basic movements, Rusty Robot is a rickety, kind-of slow character, but he is nearly indestructible in the face of small oncoming cars. When you get tired of playing with one character, you can cycle through to another and learn their new moves; ergo, making the game fun and exciting all over again.
By nature, I’m a competitive person when it comes to games. I LOVE a little healthy competition, and I was surprised that I could have that with Crossy Road. I got a few friends hooked on this game, and we decided to make it interesting by trying to beat each other’s highest scores. The loser had to foot the bill for lunch one weekend, while the winner got serious bragging rights. It was all in good fun and an awesome bonding experience between buds!
Any Negatives?
As far as I could tell, there are no blatant negatives with the Crossy Road game. However, it is VERY addictive, which MIGHT be a bit of a con if you allow yourself to spend too much time playing instead of doing the things you’re supposed to do first.
I think Crossy Road definitely has a stress relief element that makes it all the more fun, especially after a long day of work or school. You can zone out, clear your mind, and focus on getting the highest score imaginable. It’s a great way to forget your stresses for a little while.
Another negative might be if you become TOO invested in snagging that high score. As I mentioned, I am a competitive person, so it’s easy for me to get sucked into a game, then get frustrated if I lose. But you WILL lose occasionally, so just take it in stride and don’t take the game too seriously.
Play and Draw Your Own Conclusions
I could tell you about my gameplay experience for Crossy Road until the proverbial cows…errr, chickens, come home. But honestly, the best review comes from you. Hence why you should spend a little while playing and drawing your own conclusions.
If you love the game, awesome—we have loads to talk about. If not, then you are only out a few minutes and you never have to think about Crossy Road again. The point is, Crossy Road is worth a few minutes, or even an hour or two, of your time. It’s a fun stress reliever with a no-nonsense objective and cool graphics. What’s not to love?
