Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is out now on Wii U and 3DS which is available to buy from shops and the eshop! This game takes you to the host city of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, Rio de Janeiro. It features over 30 playable characters, the ability to play as your Mii, and plenty of frantic four-player multiplayer action to enjoy with friends and family, including the new Duel Events, which give familiar sports a classic Mario & Sonic twist.
There are 14 official Olympic Games disciplines and three Duel Events to play multiplayer for up to four players. The 14 official Olympic Games are Football, Golf, 100m, 110m Hurdles, Long Jump, Javelin, 100m Freestyle Swimming, Archery, Boxing, Table Tennis, Beach Volleyball, Equestrian, BMX and Rhythmic Gymnastics. Plus three Duel Events: Rugby Sevens, Football and Beach Volleyball.
Last week, we played this game with a few friends and we all had a lot of fun playing it together. I love that everyone can join in, play along with and against each other. This is such a great game to play with family and friends on a night in. It is also perfectly timed to get ourselves into Olympic fever! We can’t wait to watch the Olympic games!
Mr K loves using the Wii U GamePad to play events like the archery and running. Using the Gamepad makes it easier for him to view his characters. Out of the 14 games, we all enjoy football the most. We found it the most fun for spectators to watch too! Just watching the children tackle, pass and shoot was hilarious and great fun! And not forgetting the penalty kicks!
In the single mode game, each time you win, you get to take home virtual medals, earned rings and coins through gameplay. This can be used to buy additional costumes from the Mario series or Sonic series respectively. There is also the opportunity to challenge and unlock new Sega and Nintendo stars! Always try to aim for a gold!
For the Duel Events, you build up Duel Points by pulling off actions like tackling, spiking or shooting, then you have to score a try, point or goal to add these Duel Points to your total score.
This game takes place in venues modelled after the real-life venues of the Olympic Games. Rhythmic Gymnastics (with clubs) and Rugby Sevens – the latter making its debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – are also playable for the first time.
Besides the new events comes the new Heroes Showdown mode where competitors join up with Team Mario or Team Sonic and battle it out against the other side in knockout rounds. The events are picked at random for a real test of all-around skill, and each round a character from the losing team is knocked out until either all members are knocked out, or Team Captains Mario and Sonic are eliminated, so it’s all on the line to be the last team standing. There are also additional special tournaments that can be accessed through the use of amiibo, which can be used after completing 25 tournaments. We have not tried that out yet.
We all enjoy this game and I would highly recommend it. This is a game that can be played across all ages and especially with friends or family around or just a casual night in. The background music is fun and the graphics are superb.
