Booms Bangs! Fizzes

Welcome to Science Week which is running from the 11^th – 20^th March! Have you been helping your children prepare science experiments for school? These Booms Bangs! Fizzes kit will definitely help you rock up their science week!

This is suitable for ages eight and above. This set comes with goggles, a cone shaped lid, loading tube, rock salt, needle valve, valve tube, bung, rocket legs, film canister & lid, round & rocket balloons, straws, nylon thread, jet engine decoration sheet, red colouring, volcano, lightning aluminium tray, styrene sheet, bicarbonate of soda, syringe, nose cone and Instructions. This kit requires some additional items like lemon juice, vinegar, fizzy drink, bicycle pump, indigestion tablets and sticky tape.

There are 12 different experiments for you to try out with your children. Today, we have tried two experiments: confetti shower explosion and rock salt depth charge.

For the confetti shower explosion, we filled the balloon with used paper (cut outs from a hole punch). We then used a balloon pump to pump it up before we let the balloon go above our head and see the fuel inside the balloon, the air and paper, released through the neck of the balloon and forced out under high pressure. This force pushes the balloon forwards. Both kids loved it!

Next, I bought a 2 litre diet cola for this rock salt depth charge experiment. It is best to use diet cola as it is less sticky and it has to be at room temperature. Unscrew the lid and screw the red cone shaped lid onto the top of the bottle. Place the yellow loading tube near to the edge of a piece of thin card and pour Rock Salt inside until it is full. Remove the piece of card quickly and see the rock salt fall into the cola. As soon as it starts to fizz, the rock salt starts to explode! I find that this is quite hard to master it but we did have a bit of fizz!

This kit provides us with so many explosion ideas which really appeals to my children! They both love these sorts of experiments! Also the kit provides info for larger scale explosive projects which require you to build it with your kids.
