Music bring Family Closer with Sonos

11 March 2016 by Eileen

Do you find that listening to music puts you into a better mood? Or have you noticed it help bring the family closer? A new research from Sonos has revealed that families who listen to music out loud spend an extra hour together each week, as well as eating an extra meal together each week – that’s 52 extra meals in a year!

Kids are also more inclined to muck in on chores in musical homes, with 8 out of 10 agreeing that household tasks are easier when listening to music. Mr C often puts background music for kids to listen to while we play a game and we often find ourselves singing and dancing along with one another. We recently had an impromptu dance-off that resulted in much perceived showboating and laughter. Music definitely helps bring us closer.

The survey, of more than 4000 Brits, also found that one fifth expressed their love of someone because music was playing out loud. While two out of three agree that playing music out loud is a way of easing tension in the household. This is definitely us! Music helps us to loosen ourselves and our bones too! Also more than half of households stated that listening to music has inspired members of their households to hang out together. Parents in musical homes are more likely to have had shared more shared activities than non-musical households (10% more laughter, 20% more meals cooked together, 18% more hugging).

To put these findings to the test, Sonos have challenged four families in the UK to experience a week without music, and a week with music in the home. The findings were incredibly positive and in most cases replicated the findings of the survey.

We have been testing it out with this Sonos PLAY:1 speaker which is a compact but surprisingly powerful wireless speaker with deep, crystal clear HiFi sound. Setting up is simple and straightforward. Plug the speaker in and download the app. Then control the setting using your app and play the music. We had no problems with finding the signal and playing the music. The sound is punchy and weighty which really belies its compact size. It handles the large dynamic range of classical music well and there’s plenty of bass to boot too. Switch over to pop or rock music and the vocals are sharp, expressive and takes your music listening to a whole new level.

The Sonos PLAY:1 is available in good retailers including Amazon. As a result of this testing, we will definitely listen to music more often using this.
