How is collagen good for your wellbeing

31 August 2020 by Eileen

When seasons start to change, especially from summer into autumn, it is so important you and your family keep in good health. We need to build up our immunity so we are strong and resilient going into that long, dark winter we all know so well! That’s where collagen comes in, because to be healthy, we have to build a healthy food foundation.

How is collagen good for your wellbeing

Have you heard of collagen?

This is the main protein in our bodies, and it is responsible for so much! It plays a really important role in the maintenance of our skin, hair, joints, connective tissue, cartilage, gut health and so much more. Collagen helps keep the body doing everything it needs to, so our immune system stays robust and healthy. We produce enough of it naturally when we are young, but – you guessed it – by our mid twenties, our production levels decrease and we need an extra helping hand.

Does this sound like your body?

Joints that snap, crackle and pop when you move, aching bones, brittle nails, lacklustre or thinning hair, fine lines and wrinkles, upset bellies, difficulty digesting, a lack of vitality….all these and more could be your body telling you that it needs collagen to better look after itself.

Edible Health – for pure, natural, hydrolysed collagen

Edible Health collagen powder supplements are a really fantastic source of collagen protein. There is peace of mind knowing the business is owned and operated here in the UK by a couple, Corinna and Simon, who are really passionate about people’s health, and the quality of their product. They produce premium bovine and marine collagen powders that are 100% pure and they don’t add any nasties. When it comes to cow or fish, there is no difference between the two sources; they both work in the same way and are equally effective. Both are odourless and tasteless, and it just comes down to personal preference. The marine collagen is a little more expensive, which is due to the higher cost of the raw material.

How to take collagen supplements

Lots of people just stir their collagen into their daily coffee or smoothie – that’s how easy it is to take. Because the powders are 100% natural, they dissolve fast and effortlessly. Or, you can be a little more creative. Kids by and large don’t need collagen supplements (but for us parents, it’s a different story!). As such, try adding it to the adult portions of recipes like Sago Pearls with Melon or Stir Fried Yellow Noodles, stirring it into your favourite soup (perfect in this weather!), or just adding it to breakfast. Any of these are such speedy and simple ways to include this power protein into your daily diet. Again, don’t worry about the possibility of tasting this in your dish, you won’t. It will be working its magic without you even knowing!

Edible Health also sells collagen blends, like Gut Health and Anti-Ageing. Because these include a huge number of super nutrients, they don’t dissolve or taste the same as the plain powders. That is easily fixed, though; you just add your serving to a small amount of coconut butter or milk (Edible Health are big fans of oat milk). Mix thoroughly into a smooth paste, and then add this to your meal or drink. Start with a small serving size and experiment with different foods and drinks.

Be mindful that your body is far smarter than science could ever possibly know. Collagen is a very pure and very bioavailable form of protein (which means it is very easily digested). Protein is essential for all growing, healing, repairing and renewal in the body and so whilst you may want to see results in your hair, skin and nails, if your body needs the protein elsewhere, you may just notice other benefits that you did not expect. Corinna took collagen for a year and would have been frustrated that she experienced no improvement in her hair and nails, had it not been for the fact that she saw tremendous healing of her gut! So trust in the quality and power of collagen, and trust in your body to do the right thing.

Now is a good time to start laying the foundations for winter. This isn’t an overnight wonder; it can take several weeks for it to start having an effect. But as we know, patience is power. Your health and wellbeing will be winter-ready!
