Doomlings is a fantastic card game for casual, family-friendly play. It is quick to learn and lasts around 20 to 45 minutes. This strategic card game challenges players to survive the end of the world! It is suitable for 2 to 6 players, ages 10 and up.
The Deluxe Bundle includes the Base Game (167 cards) in an elegant Art-Deco game box, an Upgrade Pack Expansion (81 cards), a Community Playmat, and seven Collectible Mystery Holofoils. For a limited time, the bundle also comes with the Overlush Mystery Expansion Pack, featuring 56 cards and four Holofoils.
The cards themselves are very well made and each piece of art looks adorable. They are neatly stored inside a well-decorated, sturdy box.
At first, setting up the game may seem daunting, but by following or watching the introduction video, it’s actually very straightforward. Since we were new to the game, we all watched the video before diving in, and I would highly recommend other players do the same. The game also comes with setup cards for easy reference.
The community playmat is well made, featuring a soft top layer and a rubber bottom, similar to a mouse pad. The colours are vibrant and visually appealing.
To play the game, players score points by playing trait cards over multiple rounds. Each round, called an Age, introduces new rules. Traits can have different effects, such as stealing, swapping, or discarding.
But beware of Catastrophes! These special rounds bring unexpected challenges that force players to adapt. Each Catastrophe marks the end of an Era, and if you’re using the community playmat, it is clearly printed on the mat.
This bundle includes a variety of traits, Ages, and expansions, ensuring that no two games are ever the same. The game ends after the third Catastrophe, and the player with the highest score wins! If you don’t want to calculate your score manually, you can use their online score tool for quick and easy scoring.
Strategic games aren’t for everyone. Some people enjoy them, while others might find the player interaction—such as stealing and discarding—frustrating.
That said, this game is a fun, evolving card game full of surprises and strategy. It is easy to learn, and we love the challenges we face. Even Ms C, who is not normally a big fan of strategy games, enjoyed playing it together.
Their expansion packs, like Mythlings and Techlings, offer a variety for experienced players. We’re not quite at that stage yet, but hopefully, we’ll be able to include them soon! It is available to buy on Amazon. For more information, please visit the Doomlings website.
