Kirby: Planet Robobot Review

20 June 2016 by Eileen

Kirby: Planet Robobot was recently released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS family systems on the 10th June 2016. This is our first time playing Kirby and my son loves the concept of the game by borrowing your enemy’s powers to overcome obstacles. The graphics of this game are great and the storyline is to understand. We found it hard the first few times we played because we were not familiar with the concept but after a few more times, we discovered the game is straightforward, with nice and short adventures. The music is upbeat and Kirby is a very cute tiny pink life form from Plant Popstar with infinite power that can put a stop to their enemy!

Kirby: Planet Robobot is one of the more familiar games, continuing the fine work Kirby Triple Deluxe started.  Just like Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot is a traditional Kirby platformer that makes use of both foreground and background action where Kirby flits between two side scrolling planes and solves perspective-related puzzles along the way.

In Kirby’s latest platforming adventure, Kirby can now explore Planet Popstar in brand new ways, as he can move scenery, access new areas, and uncover secrets by using the Robobot Armour’s handy Wrench.  Kirby can use more than 25 Copy Abilities to borrow enemy powers and there are three new copy abilities to discover, including The Doctor Ability, the Poison Ability and the ESP Ability.  There are also three returning abilities: Jet, Mirror and Smash.

That’s not all it can do either, as by scanning enemies, it can unleash more powerful versions of some of Kirby’s well-known Copy Abilities, some of which change the platforming action in brand new ways.  You can make Kirby swallow his enemies and unleash the power and attack!

By analysing an enemy with the “Jet” Scan Spec, Kirby’s Robobot Armour will engage Jet Mode, causing it to fly across the screen in shoot-‘em-up style, while the “Wheel” Scan Spec activates Wheel Mode, turning Kirby’s Robobot Armour into a car that races between the foreground and background.

Each stages feature three hidden cubes that are needed to unlock each world’s final boss which is not hard to find.  There is also stickers are hidden throughout the game.  These stickers feature random images which can be used to personalize the Robobot between levels.

It is compatible with many amiibo and so by scanning your favourite, the pink hero will receive the same abilities.  We scanned Isabelle from the Animal Crossing and Kirby is able to copy the leaf ability by firing the leaf power! It’s a lot of fun and both children love it!

There is a new line of amiibo including, a new Kirby amiibo, King Dedede, Waddle Dee and the mysterious Meta Knight. Tapping the latter three amiibo will grant Kirby a unique ability and a change of costume based on the character scanned, while the new Kirby amiibo will give our hero the UFO ability, allowing him to float in the air indefinitely and unleash powerful Heat Beams on unsuspecting foes. If fans eager to get their hands on this ability can also choose the Kirby: Planet Robobot – amiibo Bundle, which includes a copy of the game and a Kirby Collection amiibo of Kirby.

The Kirby Collection amiibo will also give Kirby a collectible sticker that can be used to customise the Robobot Armour. Additional stickers can be found by exploring each stage, or received via StreetPass from other players with a copy of the game. By searching each level, Kirby can also find hidden Code Cubes, which will unlock additional stages after a certain amount are collected in each area.

There is one more new mode which is Kirby 3D Rumble, a single-player isometric action-puzzler which tasks our hero with sucking up objects or enemies and eliminating all foes in as few moves as possible. By sucking up multiple enemies at once, Kirby can then unleash a powerful Star Bullet that will plough through any remaining foes caught in its blast and maximise his score.

This game can also be played with up to three other players via local multiplayer or Download Play in the Team Kirby Clash, a 2D action game with RPG elements.  We have not tried out this out with friends but will hopefully soon!

Overall this game is very easy and fun to play. I would definitely recommend it.  This game is suitable for ages 7 and upwards.  Read here for more information:  https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-3DS/Kirby-Planet-Robobot-1091342.html
