Chinese New Year Fan

12 January 2014 by Eileen

Fans are easy to make – it is mainly sticking and pasting or painting.  While the kids had a go at making their fans, I also made two proper Chinese New Year Fans.

Chinese New Year Fu Fan

To make a Chinese New Year Fan, you require:

  • Thick coloured paper (At least 80 grams)
  • String (I used elastic red string)
  • Paint and paint brush
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Ang Bao/Pow

Step by Step:

  1. Firstly, I wrote a Chinese word Fu (福) and Wang (旺) on the paper and let my children paint it.  They also used glitter which I would actually not recommend at this stage because it will drop off while folding. In the meantime, I cut out the word Fu (福) from an Ang Bao/Pow and paste it on the red paper.

  2. Now let the paint dry. If your fan is not painted, you could now begin the folding now. Next, you can either choose to cut the top of the fan or leave it. I chose to cut it and also cut a heart shape on the other fan.

  3. Tie the bottom with the string.  It can be any colour string but preferable red or gold.

These are from my children.  Also if you like, you can use a thick black marker pen to go around the Chinese word to make it more outstanding.

I was meaning to make fans with Mr R today, after getting inspired by seeing all the chinese crafts around for new year! Now it’s gonna look like I have copied you lol, but I will show you once we have done – I think yours are better than ours will be 😀
