29 July 2013 by Eileen

The Kids Only Cookbook is written by Sue Quinn who is a food writer, journalist and author. She has written several cookery book. This book is aimed at 7 years old and above and published on 1 August 2013 by Quadrille Publishing. The book is hardback containing about 128 pages. It is packed with 50 simple, delicious and fun recipes containing easy-to-follow captions and 300 photos in a unique cartoon-style to inspire children of all ages to get busy in the kitchen.

The Kids Only Cookbook by Sue Quinn

Each recipe contains a culinary technique such as beating, whipping, piping or baking and ‘Adult alerts’ appear throughout the book and ensure the recipes are all easy and safe to make. I like the way the book shows photos of each kitchen utensil and the step-by-step tips/techniques from chopping an onion to using a plastic bottle to separate an egg yoke. These tips will definitely help the children learn a lifelong skill!

As my children are slightly younger than 7, we tried cooking popcorn which is one of the more simpler recipes in the book. To be honest, I have only ever cooked microwavable popcorn packs so this was a new experience for me too. Both of my children enjoys helping in the kitchen and had fun watching the popcorn POP!  It was such a great experience for us all. This is a short video we made:

The ingredients are:
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup popping corn

There are easy to challenging recipes which are indicated by the number of stars, one to three. The book is very well written and has many photos for each recipe which makes them easy to follow.  This book not only teaches you to bake cakes and puddings, but it also teaches you how to cook Chinese fried rice and pizza. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially children who has an interest in cooking. I rate this book 5 stars out of 5.
