This year, we are doing things slightly differently with our pumpkin and making it pretty unique. Ms C’s favourite colour is pink and so we decided to paint our Halloween pumpkin pink and call this girly pumpkin Emma.
Last week while both kids were in school, I went to the supermarket and bought a large pumpkin. Always remember to check the surface of a pumpkin for holes or mould, making sure it is firm and not soft.
Before carving a pumpkin, this is the equipment you may need:
- Knifes (from Arthur Price 6 Piece Acrylic Knife Block Set in Black and White)
- OXO Good Grips fruit scoops
- Metal cookie cutters
- Soft mallet
- Vaseline
- Paint, paint brushes and paint pots
- Transparent pins & glitters
- Tea candles or LED candles
Method:
- Use a big sharp knife to slide off the top but do make sure it is not too small.
- Use the scoops to scrape out the pumpkin seeds and flesh. You can either roast the pumpkin seeds or plant them. I saved the flesh for baking a pumpkin pie!
- Place the cookie cutter on the desired area and use the soft mallet to hammer it through. We had made a cloud pattern on the top of the pumpkin cover. Next we used a big round cookie cutter for the eyes and a leaf cookie cutter for the mouth.
- Next apply Vaseline around all the corners to avoid it from drying.
- Paint the pumpkins and allow it to dry before you decorate it with glitter. We used the transparent pins to pin the glitter onto the pumpkin. Occasionally, the paint would come off so you just need a small amount of paint to touch up.
This is our Pretty Pink Halloween Pumpkin designed by our little princess Ms C. She loves the pink pumpkin. It is obviously quite unusual compared to an original orange pumpkin. But Emma is a special one!
OXO Good Grips have supplied us with their new kitchen gadget – fruit scoops. When I first saw it, I thought that it would break the moment I scooped the flesh out from the pumpkin as the plastic scoops looked too thin. I was pleasantly surprise to find that they are in fact very effective and easy to use. The scoops allow me to scoop very close to the skin of the pumpkin, but given the firm texture of the flesh, I was unable to scoop large chunks out. The handles are soft and comfortable to hold.
I also used the smaller green scoop to scoop out the flesh from a kiwi. This is very effective in scooping out the flesh very close to the skin. You can get it from their website or Amazon.
We also used the Arthur Price acrylic knife to cut the fruits with ease. The set includes with five and comes with a transparent acrylic knife block which gives the appearance of knives being suspended in mid-air. There is a bread knife, slicing knife, chef’s knife, utility knife and paring knife. Each knife has a white non-stick coated blade that contrasts with the smooth black safe grip handles. The knives are very lightweight and easy to slice the food. The grip handles does feel quite plasticky which I would very much prefer to be a soft touch anti slip grip. Nevertheless it is great value for money for five knives with a stylish block! It is available to buy Arthur Price website, Amazon or good retailer stores like House of Fraser, Debenhams and others.
Disclosure: We received the sample for the purposes of writing this review, however, all thoughts and opinions remain our own.
