Getting Your Garden Ready for Summer

21 June 2023 by Eileen

Now the sun is out, is your garden looking rather sad at the moment? Are you itching to make plans for your garden for entertaining this summer? If yes, here are a few ideas you could consider to get your garden summer ready for your guests, before dragging out the garden furniture and making the most of whatever outdoor space you have.

Getting Your Garden Ready for Summer

1. Time to channel your inner Titchmarsh by getting your lawn into shape!

  • Grass grows extremely fast during this time! It does not mean you should cut your grass very short. This could put the grass at risk from weed invasions and grub infestations. You should aim to keep the grass’s height at 13–25mm (½–1in) in summer.
  • Make sure you remove all items (for example, a paddling pool, balls, BBQ pit etc.) away when not in use. This is to prevent the grass from becoming discoloured and becoming yellow.
  • Water your grass one day a week for a longer period of time.
  • Reseed any bald patches to encourage growth.
  • Edge your lawn by using a strimmer so that you have a nice clean line between the grass and any flower beds.
  • If you have missed your chance to scarify your grass in the spring, then wait till early autumn to remove any weeds or moss. Scarifying will allow light, moisture and essential nutrients to be absorbed by the grassroots.

2. Add colours by planting flowers or scented shrubs or herb walls!

  • You can use garden planters or troughs for your flowers if you don’t have the space.
  • Mix and match the flowers or shrubs for textures and colours.
  • Plant some night-scented flowers such as Nicotiana Evening Fragrance, Night-scented Stock, Hesperis, Evening Primrose or Night Phlox, whose scents will drift across the evening air.
  • Climbing plants are a good idea to act as camouflage, covering unsightly walls and boring fence panels. Personally, I don’t like the idea of climbing plants due to feng shiu. Alternatively, you can create a fresh herb wall! Not only will it give out aromatic smells, but you can also use it for your BBQ or cocktails!
  • Or get a few hanging flower baskets to add colour!

3. Get your patio or decking and all garden furniture cleaned!

  • Time to whip out your jet washer and give the items a quick blast! Transform your dirty slabs/furniture to almost new!
  • Treat your decking or garden furniture with oil or stain, depending on your choice! And invest a good quality garden furniture cover to protect it.
  • If you don’t have any garden furniture, it is good to invest in good quality garden furniture to ensure you reap the benefits year after year.

4. Add lighting and water features to enhance the mood!

  • To ensure you and your guests are able to extend well past dusk, simply decorate your garden space with outdoor lights. It will not only illuminate the surroundings but it will also add a little extra character. These stylish traditional trio of lantern houses with outdoor TruGlow® candles are great to create a comforting, homely feel to your garden space, they can also be used indoors. The smallest lantern is a great way to inject instant charm into your outdoor dining table! All the lanterns require two C batteries in the base of each candle. You can choose the 6-hour timer function for an automatic glow every night. Want an eco-friendly way to light up an outdoor space, then use solar panel lights instead.

  • Another great way to create a contemporary Zen outdoor space is to add water features. Listen to the soothing sounds of gentle water splashing while watching the warm white LED lighting gives the water a magical glow! This stunning grey-speckled stone sphere will definitely wow your guests! It is so easy to assemble and it requires an outdoor switch.

5.  Preparing Your Garden for Summer Bliss

As summer approaches, ensure your garden is ready for outdoor enjoyment with these essential tips. Incorporate Cornish Cross chickens into your garden routine for natural pest control and fertilizer production. These chickens help maintain a healthy garden ecosystem and provide opportunities for sustainable living and fresh, homegrown produce.

6. Add some WOW factors to perk up your outdoor space!

  • You can consider getting a fire pit to warm up your guests in those cooler evenings or to extend your party long into the night.
  • Scatter a lot of waterproof cushions and rugs to bring the comfort of the home outside while you enjoy the weather and good company.
  • Love cooking? Then get a BBQ to entertain your family and guests!
  • Prepare for any weather by incorporating awnings, a garden parasol or a gazebo or, if you are thinking long-term, build arches, an arbour or a pergola.

Now you can have a stunning garden to relax and unwind with a cold drink after a long working week!
