3 Helpful Tips to Getting A Replacement Social Security Card

3 Helpful Tips to Getting A Replacement Social Security Card From Home While Travelling

Some things are simply not worth losing. Things that are precious to you, maybe things or people that you hold so dear to your heart. When the time comes that they indeed get lost somehow, it often causes some degree of pain and discomfort. It usually spells trouble and stress. Maybe that thing in your mind right now is your smartphone, which holds gigabytes upon gigabytes of captured memories and images. Perhaps it’s your laptop with important files and documents stored in the deepest recesses of its hard drive. Maybe it’s a particular piece of gold and silver shaped in the form of a tiny, expensive jewelry given to you as a gift from someone special. But how about a social security card? How often do we think about the “what if’s” of losing such a thing?

3 Helpful Tips to Getting A Replacement Social Security Card

While the essence of a social security card rarely comes across our thoughts, we have to remember that a social security card is one vital document for a US citizen. It’s not just a string of nine-digit numbers that is attached to a plastic card with your details on it. It is worth a whole lot more than that in reality. Its purpose is supposed to be for personal identification. Most of the time, this numerical string is a requirement when applying for a credit card in banking institutions, or when applying for a job. Even when you apply for a loan or want to open an account in the bank, this humble paraphernalia in your wallet will be part of what they’ll look for before approval.

When this card gets lost, most probably, on a safe assumption, you don’t memorize or keep a copy of the number as well. This translates to giving you a major headache plus a mini heart attack. If you lose the card while traveling, in a place far from home, the hassle grows exponentially.

What do you do when you want to get a replacement social security card while on the go? Here’s a rundown of our top three tips:

1. Inform the proper entities about the loss.

When you lose the card, call back home and inform the necessary people, government agencies, and other institutions about the loss. They can guide you on the proper procedure on what to do next or where to go to. Sometimes, you might even need to process a document with legal counsel, or an affidavit of loss. This should be done ASAP, such that the risks of your identity being stolen or other related crimes can be mitigated. Before you request a card replacement, be sure it was confirmed as lost or stolen by authority of the law.

2. Prepare original copies of your documents.

You will need original copies- not duplicated, not notarized, not photocopied- of documents that pertain to your personal information such as your name, place and date of birth, sex, parents’ information along with their social security numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, and your affixed signature.

3. Set up an online application.

The beauty of the modern-day technology means that a card replacement can be done via application thru the web. Most websites will explain how, all you’ve got to do is go through some readings and do your assignment, and your card can be replaced relatively quickly.
