Harmful Bacteria found in Washed Clothes

19 October 2013 by Eileen

In this video, Dr. Pixie McKenna gives her top tips for ensuring laundry is clean and bacteria free. I was not aware that when doing a wash at low temperatures, bacteria remains in the washed clothes. This is very scary research. We are always reminded by social media to wash clothing at low temperatures to save the environment and reduce your electricity bill. Of course, washing at lower temperatures will also preserve the longevity of clothes, especially coloured clothing. But to think that bacteria linked to faeces is on 1 in 4 items of children’s washed clothes is very alarming!

Harmful Bacteria found in Washed Clothes - Dettol Lanudry Cleanser

So how do we make sure our clothing is free from bacteria? That is why Dettol came out with a new anti-bacterial laundry cleanser that cleanses your machine and kills 99.9% of bacteria, for hygienically clean laundry even at low temperatures. Just add 2 capfuls to the fabric softener drawer of your washing machine for washing. For soaking, add 1 cap to 2.5 litres of water of 20 degrees for 10 minutes. If you have soiled clothing, soaked them for at least 15 minutes to kill the viruses.

Dettol Anti-bacterial Laundry Cleanser: Fresh Cotton comes in a clear blue solution. I used it along with my usual Fairy non-bio washing powder. The washed wet clothes came out smelling of a nice fresh sea breeze. After the dry cycle, the smell had dissipated and was much lighter. Both my children have eczema and so far it has not affected them. Dettol Anti-bacterial Laundry Cleanser is available in Fresh Cotton and Soothing Lavender light fragrances and in any good supermarket.

This has certainly made me think – I always wash at a low temperature so I will be looking into this
