Picking the Right Floor

14 July 2015 by Eileen

Before we had our children, Mr C and I were in the market of buying a new house (our present house) and we had the chance to pick the flooring and the finishing touches as it was a new build house. After living with a young dog, which behaved like a child in many ways, we both understood that having carpet for the whole house is not ideal. There are so many factors to consider when picking the right floor for each room. Carpetright contacted me to discuss how to pick the right floor. These are our thoughts and considerations.

Picking the Right Floor

Laminate Floor vs Carpet

Having laminate floor in the living room area has some obvious benefits as this is where a lot of time will be spent. If you accidentally spill wines or sugary drinks, it is so easy to mop up quickly. If you have carpet in the living room, you might find it hard to remove the stains. Also, light coloured carpet would get quite dirty and darken in shade after some time.

If you are a carpet person, you can still consider putting rugs on the floor if you want something softer in places. The great thing about a rug is that it not only adds colour into your living place, it can be also machine washable, so it won’t inconvenience you too much if any mishaps occur.

Mix and Match

Laminate floors have a number of advantages over carpets such as they are easy to clean and you can see where the dirt is. But it is not always necessary to have the same flooring throughout the whole house. This also doesn’t mean you can’t have some carpet in your house. A good way to have the best of both worlds is to have areas such as bedrooms with carpet while the living room to have wooden or laminate floor. As for kitchen and bathroom, you might like to consider vinyl flooring or tiles.

Costs of the Flooring

Always set your budget and calculate how much it will cost. If you have restricted budget, laminate flooring will be a cheaper option than hardwood floors. Don’t forget that you may need to add the cost of underlay, delivery, and installation, as well as removal and disposal of your previous flooring.

So in our new house, we have laminate floor throughout the living area and tiles for the kitchen. It makes cleaning so much easier. As for upstairs bedroom, we have carpet to give us the extra comfort on our feet. So what about you? What would you choose?
