Improving Literacy in 7 Easy Steps

24 August 2023 by Eileen

As a parent or teacher, it is important to help your child develop strong literacy skills. Without these skills, children can suffer many consequences, including poor grades, behavioural issues, low attendance, and more.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to get your child reading and writing with confidence.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at seven practical steps you can take towards helping your child improve their literacy skills.

Improving Literacy in 7 Easy Steps

7 Steps to Improve Your Child’s Literacy Skills

1. Start early

One of the best things you can do to improve literacy is to start early. It is never too soon to introduce reading to your child as it helps them develop language and listening skills. Many parents have helped develop their children’s literacy by starting these practices before their children could speak. Continuing to read to your child as they get older can help them build their own literacy skills and foster a love of reading that will stay with them throughout their lives.

2. Make reading fun

While many young learners seem to enjoy books and reading, many of them seem to outgrow this activity as they get older. In order to make reading enjoyable for your child, you can try different strategies such as selecting books and stories that spark their interest, taking them on outings to the library or bookshop, and letting them have free choice when it comes to the books they read. Another way to make reading fun is by creating a stimulating and print-rich environment. This environment can include books, posters, charts, labels, and more. Incorporate colour, fun fonts, graphics, and a variety of materials that will engage your child and pique their interest.

3. Encourage writing

Reading and writing go hand in hand. Encourage your child to extend reading activities with various writing opportunities, such as keeping a diary, writing letters to friends or family, or even creating their own stories. By practicing writing, they’ll develop their creative and critical thinking skills, which are essential for literacy. As a fundamental literacy skill that involves decoding, encoding, and understanding written words, writing practice can greatly enhance your child’s literacy development. For extra value, your child can read their writing out loud, opening the door for conversations as well as constructive feedback.

4. Provide a quiet space

Creating a quiet space for your child to read and write can be very helpful as they practice their skills. Find a dedicated spot in your home, such as a cozy corner or desk, and make sure it’s well-lit and comfortable. This space should also be free from distractions, such as TV, toys, and other gadgets so your child can focus on developing their reading and writing.

5. Practice phonics

As the building block of literacy, phonics teaches children the sounds that letters make and how they fit together to form words. Today, you can choose from an array of fun and engaging educational tools to teach phonics and other skills. Many educators have found that elkonin boxes can help improve learning and are very appealing to children. By mastering phonics, your child will be able to read and spell with greater ease and confidence.

6. Read together

Not only is reading with your child fun, but it is one of the most effective ways to improve their literacy skills. It allows you to model good reading habits and helps your child develop their comprehension skills. Be sure to ask your child questions about the story and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions. These small but meaningful actions will help them engage with the story and retain what they’ve read.

7. Celebrate success

Finally, celebrate your child’s progress. Whether it’s mastering a tricky spelling rule or reading an entire book by themselves, letting your child know you’re proud of their achievements can be very rewarding. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool and can help spur a lifelong love of learning.

While each child is different and learns in their own unique way, there are many methods you can use to help them improve their literacy, beginning at a very young age. By following the above steps, your child will develop strong literacy skills in no time!
