Chinese New Year Pop-Out Flower Ang Pow

28 December 2022 by Eileen

Want to impress your family and friends this coming Chinese New Year 2023? Then come and try out this pop-out flower ang pow to decorate your home. This craft only uses 10 ang pows and will look great as a wall decoration. It is so easy to make too.

Chinese New Year Pop Out Flower Ang Pow

This flower ang pow display measures approximately 30 cm by 30 cm by 12 cm, not including the red string on top. The rating of difficulty is 1.5 out of 5, which should take roughly 30 minutes to complete.

I have used long rectangular ang pows for this craft, but you can use small rectangular ang pows to make too.

This craft will work well with ang pows containing a flower design. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any, but I did find these cute panda bear ang pows from one of the Asian supermarkets. The ang pows weren’t cheap though as six of these ang pows cost around £3.50. You do not need a design on the back of the ang pow, but if you manage to find some, that will be great. As for thickness, try to get very thick material in order to keep its shape. These ang pows are very thick and they keep the shape so well after I puff them out.

Chinese New Year Pop Out Flower Ang Pow instructions

To make this, you will require:

  • 10 long rectangle ang pows / red envelopes (approx. 9.5 cm by 17 cm)
  • Stapler & staples
  • Optional: 50 – 60 cm red string or double-sided tape
  • Optional: A cut-out of a Chinese word (e.g. from an ang pow), strong clear glue and scissors

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Fold the ang pow into half horizontally but don’t press the fold all the way down. Instead, just press the two corners of the join down. This is a marker for later use.

  2. Fold the top sides of the ang pow inwards. Make sure that you fold the back of the ang pow inwards to the front of the ang pow.

  3. Fold the bottom sides of the ang pow inwards. Make sure that you fold the design on the ang pow inwards to the back of the ang pow.Repeat for the rest of the ang pows.

  4. To make the front of the pop-out flower decoration, place five ang pows as shown and staple them at the top together. I like to staple as close to the fold as possible. Also, I like to put two staples on the ang pows; one at the top and one at the bottom. It will make sure the flower decoration won’t have any gaps or holes.

  5. To make the flower look smooth, take both corners of the same ang pow and staple it together. Bring those corners close to each other, but don’t over stretch it and it will straighten the shape.

  6. To make the back of the pop-out flower decoration, place five ang pows as shown and staple them at the top together exactly the same as the top.

  7. Take both corners of the same ang pow and staple them together. Bring those corners close to each other, but don’t over stretch it and it will straighten the flower shape.

  8. Place the front and back of the flower decorations together and staple them together. The bottom of the front and back of the flower decorations will slot in together nicely.

  9. Before stapling them all, remember to place a red string in between if you are going to hang it. If you are going to stick it on the wall, then place the double-sided tape on one side of the pop-out flower decoration.

  10. Before hanging it or placing it on the wall, place your hands in between and pop/puff the flower outwards.

  11. As this ang pow’s design looks great, I left the middle of the pop-out flower as-is. Even the flap has the cute panda bear design. If your ang pow’s design doesn’t come with it, you might want to opt for a Chinese word to cover the middle part of the pop-out flower decoration.

So what do you think of this pop-out flower ang pow decoration? Try to use different sizes ang pows and make a lot of different sizes of pop-out flower decorations to decorate your wall.
