Improving Our Home

14 May 2019 by Eileen

Earlier this year, we bought an old property that required a lot of renovation. It was very daunting, especially when the surveyor came back with a number of things to be fixed. One such item on the report was that the windows needed maintenance. One of the bedroom windows was not able to open fully and there were a couple which were leaking air into the house!  Also part of the roof at the front are falling apart!

We all know that it is usually best to leave the job to the professionals! Fixing the roof by yourself can be daunting if you are inexperienced. Watching DIY YouTube videos or seeking advice from family and friends is not enough to help you to fix it on your own. I would always look for a good brand like Edinburgh Roofers, where you can find Edinburgh Roofing Company with great Google reviews to give me a hand with their expertise.

I have not had any experience of choosing a window company before so I asked around online but no one was able to help. Nevertheless, I found Windows4You due to a Facebook competition I had entered during the Christmas period. I contracted them and within days, they came to measure up the windows. As part of the work, we also decided to change our front and back doors and the sliding door to a bifold door.

While we walked around the property, one of them spotted a window with the beading outside of the house instead of inside the house. The beading is easily removed and could be a potential break-in risk. I am so glad that they had spotted it so we had it changed too.

Within days, we had our quote and decided to proceed with Windows4You. They came back again to do a final check and go through the design of the windows and doors. Little did we know, we had so many decisions to make! From picking the colour of our front door to choosing the type of glass and the colour of the handles. Also, not forgetting adding anti-snap locks for our doors. I am glad that Windows4You offers so many options to make sure we were happy with our choice. We also had to choose the colour for the sealant around the windows!

Once we made half the payment, it took them around 10-14 days to manufacture. We had an installation date booked in quite quickly once the windows arrived at their warehouse. They came soon after but when they started installing, we realised that the windows were slightly smaller than the existing windows and so we had to stop the installation and they reordered it in the correct sizes.

Second time lucky and this time the windows and doors fit well. As the job was quite big with many windows changed, and the fact that we had other work going on, Windows4You agreed to come on a different date to install the bifold door, front and back door! As this was our first time getting new windows and doors, we now have a much better appreciation of the work involved, from removing the old, installing the new and all the finishing touches around the frame.

I am pleased with the windows and doors we had installed. We did have an issue with the handle of the bifold door and they came and fixed it. It is quite common for them to come back as the bifold door require time to settle in and level itself. We did have some slight communication barrier with some staff but Steve always helped us get it right. It is quite reassuring. We might have had an issue during the initial installation due to the wrong sizes but they were there to come and put it right.

These are a few photos of our new windows and doors! If you have any questions about picking windows or doors, let me know in the comments below!

Updated September 2023: We had a few cracked glass windows due to place black items near the windows.
