Kurio Smart 2 in 1 Tablet Review

30 October 2018 by Eileen

Kurio Smart 2 in 1 is a premium tablet using an Android 8.1 (Go edition) for children to do homework and play. It has a 16 GB internal memory with Quadcore processor for quick web-surfing, quicker photo and video processing, music streaming and faster downloads! It is expandable up to 128 GB using with a microSD card to save files, such as videos, music and photos from the device to the card or used as internal storage that allows you to install apps and save data to it.

This large 10 inch multi-touch screen tablet comes with a protective magnetic cover and a detachable wireless keyboard. This grey magnetic cover is very well-made and thin. I love the classy grey colour as it looks very smart. It is foldable to allow the tablet to be displayed for reading, watching and typing and the magnetic board secures the keyboard very well. This wireless keyboard does require pairing for the first time and after that, it works instantly whenever you turn it on. The keyboard is lightweight and requires charging via the USB port. It takes a few hours to charge and once it is fully charged, the light will go off. There have been a few occasions that we have forgotten to turn it off and the battery drains out very quickly.

In the box, it also comes with a micro USB cable with power adaptor and instructions. For the first initial use, they recommend a 3 hour charge. So if you are buying one for Christmas or birthday present, you might want to charge it first and set it up before wrapping it up!

During the initial set up, you will need to key in your Wi-Fi passcode and also sign into your Google Play account. It took me around 30 minutes to set it up with all the updates. If you don’t have a Google account, it is best to get one. I did regret signing in with my blogging Google account as notification as all sorts of information/files that are linked with the account can now be accessed or seen by my child. There is a way to stop them from accessing these by removing the app but it also means it won’t be able to back up their files or photos.

Once you start up your child’s profile, you have to choose from the different types of authentication (pin, password, pattern). Then add your child’s name and date of birth. This will reflect the web access according to their age. Kurio reassures parents that their advanced filtering system allows children to access safely, by blocking websites that may contain inappropriate content, categories and updates 32+ billion web pages daily!

To add any apps or games, go to your Play Store and download it. Once downloaded, parents will need to approve the app. I did struggle to find the app until I realised that I have to log into the parent management to approve the app and also the camera feature. This comes with a front & back camera and video recorder. The quality of the camera is about average.

This tablet comes with 2 MP front and rear cameras. The picture quality is average as you would expect for 2 MP cameras. Nevertheless, children won’t worry about it too much. It can also take videos.

As this tablet is using Play Store, you can download many useful apps for your child like Go Assistant, Google Maps, Dropbox, Calculator etc. There is also a radio, alarm and many more.

This tablet is also great for watching videos with its large screen. We have signed up to a Netflix account via the app, which allows them to watch or download a movie. Mr K is very pleased with it as now he can use this tablet to watch his favourite Japanese animes!

Another selling point of this tablet is the ability to use it to do homework. It comes with the WPS Office app pre-loaded which comprises of a word document, excel/spreadsheet, presentation and notes/memo. It is fully compatible with other Microsoft/Google Docs allowing children to do all of their school tasks with ease. We are able to create documents and print with it via a wireless printer. I didn’t even need to download the HP app to set up the printer. The tablet is able to detect the printer and print it wirelessly. I am very well impressed. It means less hassle for me and children can print their work easily themselves.

In my video, I will show you all the features and how to use this for your child to do their homework etc. https://youtu.be/UncZEtMaK0o

General navigation is responsive and apps load swiftly. Overall I love that this is not just a tablet for children, in fact, this tablet will grow with them. You can make adjustments as they grow. It will make a great Christmas gift or birthday present. It is available to buy from a number of retailers including Very, Amazon and Argos.
