As some of you might know, I am bilingual and I am always on the lookout for educational books that teaches Chinese culture and language. It is very important for me to teach both of my children about their heritage.
This Chinese Zodiac Animals is written in simple plain English which is easy to understand and suitable for younger children to follow. It doesn’t contain too many big or difficult words. There are also plenty of colour and adorable illustrations that will appeal to all ages.
In ancient China, each sign marked a different year in a 12-year cycle. Over time, people believed that a person’s character and destiny were somehow decided by his or her zodiac animal. This book explains the traits of each animal sign and what luck the future might hold for the person born under that sign. I find that this book is more or less like typical astrology summations that suggest that people’s behaviours might be similar to the sign’s characteristics! It is a fun and informative way to learn all 12 animals! Of course, whatever is said in the book can be taken with a pinch of salt. It does not always apply to everyone.
My children, especially my daughter, are fascinated with the contents of the book. She is very keen to read about her own zodiac, the Ox and we learn that the Ox is stubborn, which is quite true to her personality. We all had a laugh about it.
This is a simple book to introduce young children to the Chinese zodiac. The book is available to buy in good bookstores, Amazon and Tuttle Publishing.
