My Home My Style

14 March 2018 by Eileen

Learning your own style can be a lifelong journey. Everyone’s taste is different and there are so many different ways, styles and trends with which to decorate your home to make it your very own paradise, like Minimalist, Industrial, English Garden, Scandinavian, Luxe etc. So what does your style look like?

My Home My Style

When we first set up our home, we always knew that Minimalist was the style we wanted to aim for. Our home also happened to be our workplace where Mr C and I spend the most time in. There is nothing better than working from home in your very own paradise.

Minimalist is about freedom, and when it comes to your home, this is freedom from the things you own. Mr C and I are not sentimental towards objects, belongings and furniture. I think this has been instilled in us from growing up in very cluttered houses.

My dad used to own a warehouse near the port in Singapore, where he stored cargo containers from all over the world. This also meant my parents’ house was constantly filled with faulty returned goods from his customers. At one time, our toilets were filled with stacks of cheap hideous plates!

As for Mr C, his mum is a hoarder who would never throw anything out. She kept my sister-in-law’s cot from when she was a baby for 16 years and offered to give it to our first son, Mr K to use! She even kept lots of Mr C’s toys from 30 years ago!

The minimalist look is all about creating illusions of space and allowing for freedom in your home, therefore making the room feel bigger and emptier. It also means minimal of furniture. Keep the place organised and don’t let things build up!

As we have a very small living room, we chose a sofa which only accommodates the four of us. It’s also not very tall and doesn’t take up too much floor space so it seems smaller than your average equivalent sofa. We also use a lot of white and light colours to create an illusion of a bright and airy space by having lots of white walls. Three years ago, I bought silk sequin silver cushion covers to help bounce more light around the living room. Now that it’s time to update some of our soft furnishings, I can’t wait to spend some time to check out Julian Charles to give my home a new lease of life! Have you incorporated a style that you love, or is there a particular style you aspire to for your home? Do let me know in the comments!
