Real Construction Review

27 November 2016 by Eileen

Real Construction sets from Jakks Pacific are the perfect set for the beginner craftsman which comes with wood-like material allowing kids to saw, nail, screw and build new designs.  Would your child like to build their very own miniature treasure chest box or a boat?  If so, then this Real Construction set will make a great gift for them to start with!

We have received the Real Construction Starter set and Real Construction Deluxe Workshop set.  Ms C was very excited when she saw these.  She is always keen to follow the designs whereas Mr K always likes to freestyle and craft something from his imagination.

The Real Construction Starter set has everything you need to get started including a small hammer, saw, nails, screw and wood-like material which make up a total of 51 pieces! The set comes complete with instructions for two projects (plus four more projects that can be downloaded via the website) and with enough materials to build two complete projects only.  So it is best to plan to see if the project you choose allows you enough material to make another one.

My daughter decided she wanted a boat as shown on the box. The instructions didn’t come with it so my husband printed it out via the website. This is Ms C’s first time doing something like this from scratch.  She was at quite a loss looking at the instructions so Mr C had to help her to measure the materials using a Sharpie. Through Mr C’s guidance, Ms C was able to piece everything together.  She enjoyed sawing through the materials and loved using the hammer. Occasionally Mr C had to help push the nails into the materials to make it easier to hammer. Each tool provided is very well made and sturdy.  The whole project took them an hour to make and they were very pleased with the result!

Later, Ms C took it into the bath and play with it!  She was delighted that it could float!

Next, we had the Real Construction Deluxe Workshop set which has over 125 pieces.  This extensive set comes with everything budding craftsmen needs to complete their own projects.  There is a set square, saw, hammer and nails to build your designs. It comes complete with instructions for eight project ideas and enough material to complete four designs. You do have to plan it well otherwise you won’t have enough materials to do other designs.

Mr K went for the easiest project which was making a treasure chest.  This is more straightforward and for the beginner. He did need my help to measure the materials and to cut the curved corners.  The tools provided were great and easy to use. For this project, I did use my own ruler rather than the set square provided as the set square was just not long enough to do some of the measurements.

As this is Mr K’s first time, he tended to saw the material sideways and not in a straight line.  So I had to help him to smooth the materials using a craft knife and scissors to make sure that the chest will close nicely! Also we had to help him to push some of the nails into the materials as they were in quite an odd position.  Overall he was very happy with his treasure chest!

I think this is a great set for children who love to build.  We enjoyed this experience but I do think these sets are more suited for older children perhaps from eight and above, instead of six.  The tools and materials provided are great and there are projects that will appeal to all!  The sets are very reasonable price and I would recommend them.

We also received the Beano magazine which also comes with the step by step Real Construction guide!  Do check it out!

It looks like a fun thing to do. It must be great for them doing something like this. I like this a lot, it’s a great gift too.
