How can I start a healthier life?

8 October 2015 by Eileen

The world is full of different cultures, but in every culture there are many people seeking to make their life a healthier one. It doesn’t matter who you are; there are three main ways you can start on a healthier path. The first thing you need to do is check your diet, and make any necessary adjustments. Eating healthily is only part of the battle; you also need to introduce exercise into your life. Finally, you should try and reduce your stress levels.

It’s important that you look at all three of these aspects of your life. Yes, having your “five a day” fruit and vegetables is important, but it isn’t going to give you the optimum healthy lifestyle if your idea of exercise is clicking the TV remote. Let’s take a look at some of the things you need to consider and change to become healthier.

How can I start a healthier life

Why is a healthy diet so important?

Never underestimate how important it is to eat healthily, and there’s no excuse. Many people use cost as the reason they can’t adopt a healthy diet, but there are plenty of offers available on internet. You can browse VoucherBin to get the vital discounts and vouchers; you need to help you eat more healthily. Eating a healthy diet can help you reduce the risk of:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Osteoporosis

It’s recommended that a third of your diet should consist of fruit and vegetables, including vegetable portions on your meals, fruit drinks and salads. You should also make up approximately a third of your diet with starchy foods which contain carbohydrates. These are the main source of energy for your body. Dairy foods should make up approximately 15% of your diet, with non-dairy proteins making up approximately 12%. The remainder of your diet can contain the sugary items which you love but should not have too much of.

What exercise you should follow?

Experts recommend that you should aim to get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each week, if you are a healthy adult aged 65 or under. Obviously, you can opt for doing more rigorous exercise for fewer minutes if you wish. If you opt for moderate exercise, this can include:

  • Water aerobics
  • Fast walking
  • Cycling
  • Hiking
  • Rollerblading
  • Sports such as basketball

There is plenty of choice. Doing 150 minutes exercise each week is equivalent to just half an hour each day. You should also aim to do some muscle strengthening exercises two or three times a week. If you’re older then 65, have health issues, or are overweight it’s often a good idea to check with a doctor before you embark on a programme of exercise.

Why reducing stress helps keep you healthy?

Your body is built to handle a certain amount of stress; it’s actually good for you at normal levels. Once you start to be overly stressed, with no relaxation, then you can experience problems such as:

  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

If you have a life that is busy, you have a lot of responsibilities or you are experiencing a stressful event, it’s important you look after your health. Take some time out to just sit and clear your mind. Activities such as yoga can be very helpful. Even if you just go for a walk in the park, or take in a film, relieving the stress is very important. You will get to learn what works best for you.

If you want to feel healthier then you may have to make adjustments to what you eat, your physical activity levels and your stress relief techniques. Remember, making the effort to do this will all be worth it in the end.
