Want to get a shiny penny? It is very easy! Recently, we have been focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), learning through educational focused activities at home.
This is a very simple science project that you could do with your toddler or young children at home. There are so many ways of shining your pennies using lemon juice, vinegar, a fizzy cola drink and all sorts.
For this project, we have only used two items to clean it. Water and lemon to compare. I didn’t get other items just in case it confused my daughter.
We have used the Primary Science Lab set from Learning Resources which we have won through an Instagram competition. If you don’t have a test tube, just use a bowl or mug.
To set up this project, we placed water and lemon juice in a different test tube. Then drop the pennies into the test tube. Wait for 10 minutes before removing them out and clean it with kitchen towels.
All being well, using the lemon juice should clean the penny very well! Now you have a sparkling clean copper penny!
You could ask your children: “Which one cleans better?”, “Why does lemon juice clean better than water?”, etc.
