Thanks to the Science4you Chemistry kit, we have learnt how to inflate a balloon without blowing it. This is one of the experiments listed in the booklet. Click here to check out our review. I have altered a few bits of materials you need.
To inflate the balloon, you will need:
- Balloon
- Baking Soda
- Vinegar
- Rubber band
- Funnel
- Plastic bottle (small)
Method:
- Fill the bottle halfway with vinegar.
- Put 10g of baking soda inside the balloon using a funnel.
- Stretch the mouth of the balloon over the top of the bottle (without spilling the contents) and use a rubber band to tie it around the bottle neck.
- Pour the contents of the balloon inside the bottle. The balloon will slowly be inflated.
The reason is when adding baking soda in a solution of water and vinegar, a chemical reaction occurs that releases a large quantity of carbon dioxide, enough to inflate the balloon.
This is a simple and safe experiment to do with younger children but always be careful.
