Chinese Roast Pork

20 June 2014 by Eileen

Sometimes it is difficult to buy the Chinese food that I crave for.  So this year, I challenged myself to try cooking more Asian food.  I am an amateur at cooking but am keen to learn.  I took this recipe from Rasa Malaysian.  I was so pleased with the results!  Click here to see her recipe.

I bought the pork belly via the butcher as I could tell them the size of the pork I needed.  The bigger the better as it shrinks quite a lot.

The rest of the ingredients can be found in any supermarkets, like salt, garlic and five spice powder.  I love how simple this roast pork dish is.  There are only 4 ingredients.  I had added fresh garlic clove and chopped garlic on a separate occasion and I found it is not necessary.  There’s no discernible difference to the taste.  I do find added salt help to make the skin very crispy and tasty.

Rather than me copying her recipe here, please click the link and have a look.  I will show you some of the photos of the cooking process though.

This is how I arranged a pan on the bottom 1/3 of the oven rack and filled with water.

This photo is where I removed the pork belly from the oven, pulled off the salty crust and discarded.

After cooking it, this was how it looked! It was gorgeous and very tasty.  It does take a long time to cook but it is extremely easy and the results are fantastic and well worth it.
