My mother in law is an expert at cooking char siu pork. She gave me her recipe seven years ago but I had never tried to cook it. This is one of my husband’s favourite dishes and he gets to eat it whenever he visits his mum. So I decided it is about time that I would try to learn!
Choosing the right part of the pork meat is very important! My mother in law suggests to use pork shoulder as it is very tender. Otherwise Tenderloin is fine.
I tried the recipe with both tenderloin and pork shoulder. I found that the pork shoulder is so much tastier and nicer to eat.
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons of Hoi Sin Barbecue sauce
- 3 tablespoons of crushed Yellow Bean sauce
- 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
- chopped fresh garlic
- a pinch of salt
- tenderloin/shoulder pork
Methods:
- Add all ingredients in a ziplock bag and marinate overnight
- Preheat the oven at 190 degrees
- Place the pork in for 25 minutes and flip over for another 25 minutes. Try to adjust the time according to the thickness of the meat.
Hope you enjoy this recipe.
Seeing these pictures has made my tummy rumble, looks fabulous 🙂
Yum, I have always fancied trying to make this myself. Was wondering where to get the yellow bean sauce from but notice you commented to another commenter about Chinese supermarket so I will try there!

That looks yummy! Now I just need to a) find the ingredients and b) learn how to cook fried rice!!
My Husband and Daughters would thoroughly enjoy this. Shall have to give this a go. Thank you for sharing the recipe
I should share this with my friends, they love Chinese roast pork from my parents’ takeaway and say they don’t know how they will ope when they retire. Hopefully this will soften the blow 🙂

Oh, that looks incredible. Despite being married to a Frenchman, and cooking lots of French cuisine, we both love Asian food, in particular Chinese, so I’ll be sharing this with Hubs!

I love char siu pork but never made. I’m going to give it a go! But where do you get yellow bean sauce from? We used to be able to get it easily from local supermarkets but haven’t been able to get it for years. I miss it!
I bought in Chinese supermarket. It is Amoy crushed yellow bean sauce. They do sell those ready made char siu sauce. But this recipe is pass down by my in law. Hope it help!
Thank you! I’m going to have a hunt to see if we’ve got a Chinese supermarket nearby, as I don’t know of any. Otherwise I might have to have a look online I think.
I love Char Siu. I might have to give this a try. I agree that the Pork Shoulder looks better.
