LG GS5163AVLZ American-Style Fridge Freezer

4 February 2013 by Eileen

I have had this LG GS5163AVLZ American Style Fridge Freezer for over a couple of weeks now. My first impression is that I really like the ice and water dispenser which requires no plumbing.  My old American Style fridge freezer needed to be plumbed and needed to change the water filter every 6 months which was a bit troublesome. Besides spending extra money to buy the water filter, installing the water filter felt like a chore as you needed to prime the water tube until the water ran clear.

My LG fridge

This LG has an overall gross storage capacity of 538 litres. The fridge section has three adjustable main shelves, with a bottle holder for you to keep something chilled at hand. The shelves can be moved to accommodate larger items. It has two drawers for fresh fruit and vegetables, where one drawer has a humidity control, so you can keep them fresher and tastier for longer. The bottom drawer is for keeping meat and fish with it’s own humidity control.  With the addition of five door shelves, you have extra space for your cartons and condiments. It does comes with an egg holder.

The water dispenser container is quite easy to remove. Turn the knob to open, pull the bottle towards you and lift it out. If you don’t want to use the water dispenser, the container can be removed to increase the storage on the shelf as long as you fit the cap. Also if you prefer to leave the container in, there is a flap to open and pour in your water through there.

The freezer offers you fantastic storage with 5 shelves and 2 drawers, giving you easy storage so you can find your frozen goods quickly. The downside of the freezer are all 5 shelves are fixed, the drawers are not massively spacious and the LED light is quite dim. There are 3 door shelves to hold small items like ice creams etc. I found that having the option to have extra storage for the ice box is really good. During winter, we hardly use ice and so having the option to replace the ice bucket with the included tray, gives the freezer extra storage.

The touch display on the front is very simple to use.  There are temperature controls for the fridge and freezer. There are three options for dispensing: ice, crushed ice or chilled water.  I really like the light while you dispense ice or water. It is a clever idea and handy as you can get water or ice without switching on your main kitchen light. There is also a power freeze option and a child lock function.

This is my video review which also shows you how I remove the water container and how to fix the tray into the ice box area: https://youtu.be/Ipib8dgTPd4

I rate this fridge freezer 4 stars out of 5. The reason for not having the additional star is that the hum from the fridge freezer can be quite loud at times and the LEDs inside the fridge/freezer are very dim. Overall I think this is a great fridge.

Disclosure: We won this fridge through a competition held by LGUK competition on Twitter at #LGFridgeArt through BritMums by posting my children’s artwork.

Congratulations hon! I also won my American Fridge Freezer and they are just fantastic. I love mine. I love being able to just buy what I want for my big family and there will be room in the fridge for it, and the fact that it costs less to run than my 12 year old traditional fridge freezer despite the size! 😀

That looks quite an impressive fridge!! But I think if I had a fridge that size it would cost me a fortune trying to fill it…lol I always like to have a full fridge 🙂
