Chinese New Year Mini Ang Pow Lantern

14 January 2013 by Eileen

I was asked by our Lichfield Mandarin Club to teach our members to make a Chinese New Year mini ang pow lantern.  So I decided to blog the step by step instructions. The difficulty rating is 1 out of 5. You can also make more than one lantern and decorate them like how you decorate your Christmas tree.

Materials:

  • 1 long rectangle ang pow / red envelope / red packet (approx. 9.5 cm by 17 cm)
  • 1 small stripe of red paper (approx. 1 cm by 20 cm) – handle for your lantern
  • stapler & staples
  • scissors

These are the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Fold the long ang pow in half (along the length) and press it down.

  2. Cut slits along the side of the red packet by cutting halfway along the width. Keep each slit to approx 0.5-1 cm apart.

  3.  Roll the red packet and staple the top with the stripe of red paper and bottom.

  4. Staple the other side of the strip of the paper onto the lantern.

So simple and you could recycle lots of paper to make them. Great idea!

Hello!

Welcome to ET Speaks From Home!

Hi, I’m Eileen — a mum of two teenagers, aged 18 and 17, and a passionate lifestyle blogger sharing snippets of family life, creativity, and culture since May 2012. My daughter lives with visual impairment, and our journey together has shaped much of the heart behind this blog.

Whether I’m creating festive crafts, exploring Chinese traditions, or trying out new recipes, I hope to inspire others through everyday moments from home.
