Summer Reading Challenge

11 August 2012 by Eileen

I can’t believe that we are almost at the end of the 3rd week of the school summer holidays.  We have been doing a lot of reading and also completed the Staffordshire Libraries Annual Summer Reading Challenge.

The Tots 100 Book Club is where bloggers share their favourite stories. This month, they are going to publish a special edition of the Tots 100 Book Club, in association with Tesco Books, with a round-up of 50 great books to read this summer.

I am a big fan of Julia Donaldson. I love the way she write her books. Her story has beautiful rhymes and illustrations and a clever ending. That’s why I always choose her books for my children.

This Summer, I selected these three books by Julia Donaldson with my children for the Tots 100 Book Club – Summer Reading Challenge:

1. What the Ladybird Heard

Summer Reading Challenge what the ladybird heard

This is the story about how a little spotty ladybird overhears the entire plan of two thieves to steal the farm’s prize cow. She, who had never said a word before, immediately comes up with a plan to foil the two crafty robbers, Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len and save the cow. This book gave my children plenty of opportunity to make different animals noise. They do get a bit confused at the second part of the story where each animal makes the sound of another in order to confuse the robbers. Overall, they enjoyed reading this book a lot.

2. The Princess and the Wizard

Summer Reading Challenge princess and the wizard

It’s a story based on a Princess Eliza who had seven chances to escape by changing her colour and changing her shape from the Wicked Wizard. It is very cleverly written to teach children about different colours, days and animals. Ms C made me read it over and over again! She loves being a princess and reading about princesses!

3. Tyrannosaurus Drip

Summer Reading Challenge tyrannosaurus drip

Tyrannosaurus drip’s story was quite similar to ugly duckling. It was the quirky rhymes and amusing undertones that made this book so interesting. I am not very good at pronouncing Tyrannosaurus so I was amazed how Mr K was able to recite it straight away! Mr K is a fan of dinosaurs and he loves the stunning illustrations by David Roberts. It’s a book for dinosaurs fan! I hope you enjoy the books I recommended for children! Let me know your children’s favourites!

Whether I’m creating festive crafts, exploring Chinese traditions, or trying out new recipes, I hope to inspire others through everyday moments from home.
