I come from Singapore and we did not use phonics during my school time. So I had absolutely no idea what phonics was, let alone teach Mr K. Having apps on the iPad is always so handy as they can learn phonics if they are not playing outdoor or in a car journey. This app that I had downloaded is called Twinkle Phonics Suite where you learn British Phonics – Reading, Writing & Spelling.
In this DVD, there are 12 episodes running 86 minutes in total. They are: Alphablocks A-Z letter sounds; On letter sounds; Van; Party; Web; Wig; Rainbow; Zap; Box; Quick; ABC and The Cat Sat On The Mat. Each episode is fairly short, at approximately 4 minutes long. The programme is very engaging and both children enjoyed every minute of it. There is a lot of music, singing and interesting ways of presenting the words.
I first heard about phonics through my son attending preschool. It get me wondering whether I really have to learn this. I come from Singapore and we did not use phonics during my school time. That was at least 20 over years ago. At that time, I had absolutely no clue what phonics was.
When my son came back from preschool, he would tell me about the phonics he learnt. In my mind, I kept asking myself, “where should I start and where can I get the best education materials for my children in order to get them ready?”. Before Mr K started his reception, I was on the lookout and bought him lot of assessment books and flash cards. As I begun to understand what phonics was, I realised I had no idea how to pronounce the letters, let alone teach Mr K.
