X-Sense Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Recently, I reviewed the X-Sense Wi-Fi smoke alarm and mentioned how inconvenient it is to have three separate smoke alarms that do not communicate with one another. I would not be able to hear the one in the annexe if it rings because it’s quite far from my bedroom in my main home. Now, that problem is solved with these wireless interlinked smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that can communicate with each other.

So what does interlinked means? It means if one alarm goes off, they all go off. As I mentioned earlier, I may not always hear the alarm closest to the potential fire, depending on where I am in my home. This interlinked system will alert everyone immediately.

This X-Sense smoke and carbon monoxide alarm set comes in a set of three alarms. They are all sealed and battery-operated with an estimated 10 years of use. Once the batteries are depleted, the units will be useless. This wireless type of smoke alarm suits us better as we don’t like the idea of having them hard-wired.

This alarm comes in a stylish housing that is made from flame-retardant high-temperature-resistant ABS material. A 10-year sealed lithium battery is included, as well as three sets of three screws, three sets of three wall plugs, three mounting brackets and instructions. The alarms will flash green once every 60 seconds. It has an 85 dB alarm and smoke and CO sensors.

Before you install the alarms using the screws and wall plugs provided or a good quality adhesive pad, which is not provided, you should test and link them first. The alarms for the multi-pack have already been interconnected, but if you are buying an extra alarm to connect with the others, you would have to disconnect the new one before linking them. Place the mounting brackets on the alarm and click to activate/turn it on. Take two units to link at a time. Press 4 times on the first alarm and 2 times on the second alarm. You can link up to 24 alarms.

As for the location, this alarm can be installed on the ceiling or the wall. It is best to place it at least 1.5m away from potential smoke or fume sources such as stoves, furnaces, water heaters and space heaters. We once placed a smoke alarm above the stove in my London flat. At that time, it seemed like a good idea except the alarm would often go off whenever we started cooking.

Also, it is best to place them at least 50 cm away from all corners of a room. If installed on the wall, keep it between 10 to 30cm below the ceiling. If you have long corridors, you might need more than one smoke alarm. Also, avoid using them near fluorescent lights, amateur radios, electrical equipment, or other devices that may transmit an RF signal, as electronic noise may cause nuisance alarms.

Install one alarm on each floor at a minimum and keep them installed in a straight vertical line to ensure optimal signal transmission. Please refer to their instructions for more installation tips.

The set-up is easy and straightforward but can take a while so allow yourself plenty of time to familiarise yourself with the LCD display messages shown. It is easy to use and the sounds are loud. It works as you would expect it to. I love that now we can be alerted wherever we are in the property. The disadvantage is that I will have to buy all new units when the batteries die. Nevertheless, this X-Sense smoke and CO alarm is definitely good value for money. You are paying for two functions in one well-made device and they are all linked.
