This X-Sense Wi-Fi smoke alarm is a smart gadget that will let you know what is going on in and around your home while you are away with the app notifications. It can notify your loved ones too. All you need to do is to add them via the smoke alarm’s Device Settings interface and select Device Sharing. Then enter the X-Sense accounts that you would like to share with.
This smoke alarm comes in a compact stylish housing that is made from flame-retardant high-temperature-resistant ABS material. A 3V CR123A lithium battery is included, as well as two screws, two wall plugs, a mounting bracket and instructions. The battery lasts for a year. You will get a notification to change your battery via the app when the battery is low. The alarm will also bleep every 60 seconds. It has an insect-proof design, 85 dB alarm and it complies with EN 14604 Standard.
You can choose to install the smoke alarm using the screws and wall plugs provided or simply use a good quality adhesive pad, which is not provided. Personally, I favour screwing it to the ceiling for more reassurance of it staying on.
As for the location, this smoke alarm can be installed on the ceiling or the wall. It is best to place it at least 1.5m away from potential smoke or fume sources such as stoves, furnaces, water heaters and space heaters. I once placed a smoke alarm above the stove which seemed like a good idea at the time except the alarm would often go off whenever I started cooking. Also, it is best to place at least 50 cm away from all corners of a room. If installed on the wall, keep it between 10 to 30cm below the ceiling. If you have long corridors, you might need more than one smoke alarm. As this requires Wi-Fi, you will need to install it within the router’s coverage area and make sure there are as few obstacles between them as possible. Refer to their instructions for installation.
Before the installation, it is best to test and get your smoke alarm connected. To do that, you will need to download their free app via the App Store or Play Store. The app code can be found on the box. Then you will need to have your Bluetooth turned on, your device QR scan code and your home Wi-Fi password. It requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network to work.
The set-up is straightforward but can take a while so allow yourself plenty of time. You can name your device and its location via the app and link up to 24 smoke alarms in one home. I have only received one smoke alarm, hence I am unable to check this out.
I do like how this Wi-Fi smoke alarm works. At the moment, I have three smoke alarms installed in different locations of my house and they work independently. I would not know if the one in the annexe building rings as it is quite far from my main home. With this app, I can be notified first-hand. Also, if it is a false alarm, I can turn it off via the app which is great as I often have to get a small stool out to be able to reach the smoke alarm hanging on the ceiling t manually turn it off.
If at anytime your Wi-Fi is disconnected, the app will display “Offline”. There is nothing to worry about, as the device will continue to work on its own. It is just that you are unable to control it via the app.
Overall this smoke alarm is so easy to install and set up. It works as you would expect it to. X-Sense smoke alarm is available to buy via Amazon.
