These days, there are so many talks and debates regarding climate change and what we could do to make this world a better place. The government is working hard to get everyone on board to make a small step to stop this climate crisis. But are we doing enough? There is never the perfect time but maybe it is time for you to look around and make your home more eco-friendly to work for a better future for all of us.
Today, I am sharing some tips that I have made around my home to be more eco-friendly and our future plans in response to doing our part to stop climate change.
Swap to LED light bulbs
We are all very tempted when we see a bargain especially a cheap light bulb. But it is time to ditch this idea of replacing something that is cheap but not efficient. It is worth to invest more on LED light bulbs as they can last much longer and use less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs.
Boil the amount of water you need
One of the inefficient household items we had identified in our home was our old kettle. We had it for years and even though it was a fast boil kettle, it still used a lot of energy and it difficult to see the water level indicator. We have swapped to an energy-saving kettle that boils a cup of water in just a few seconds and boils 1.7L water (10 cups) in 4 to 6 minutes with 2000W which is faster than a stove or microwave and uses less than half the energy of stovetop kettles. Also, as it’s glass, we can see the water level and only boil what we need.
Turn off your light
Always remember to turn off your lights when they are not in use. We always remind our children to do so and by educating them, they always remember to do so.
Check your windows
Ill-fitted windows are most likely losing a lot of heat and costing you a lot of money to heat up your home. When we first moved into our house, a lot of the windows could not shut properly and we could hear a lot of traffic noise which was a sure sign that it wasn’t insulating very well. We quickly changed to new double glazed windows and it has definitely helped to keep the warmth in and noise away in the house. Also, it is worth getting a good quality curtain or blind to help keep even more warmth in! Not forgetting to clean your windows to improve natural light in your home!
In our near future, we are looking at building an extension at the back of the house by using an aluminium lantern roof. Having lantern roofs around the extension will let in plenty of natural light plus it looks so stylish and more modern than just a flat roof.
Dry your clothes on a rack
Honestly, it is very easy to throw everything into your dryer, but have a think! If possible, why not air dry your clothing plus they will last longer. It does help to have a good quality drying rack, but a plain old clothesline works, too.
Get a compost bin
Composting your food waste not only helps our precious landfill space but you can also get free fertilizer via your own food waste.
Switch to paperless
Switching to paperless not only helps to reduce environmental impact, but it can also help businesses reduce costs. Get tech-savvy and switch your bills and statements online! After so many years of receiving paper bills from my Singapore home government, finally from next year onwards, I can switch to online! What a massive relief!
Get houseplants or plant more trees
Indoor plants serve a practical and aesthetic purpose and will enhance your life. Houseplants will not only freshen up the air but also eliminates harmful gases like CO2. If you have a big garden, why not plant more trees! It helps improve the soil, clean the air, support wildlife and most importantly improve health.
I hope these tips give you some ideas to make your home a better place! Please do leave a comment below if you have any tips to share!
