If you are planning on selling your home, there are a few things you could do to make your house look more appealing to buyers. You don’t need a full-blown makeover. In fact, a few simple changes will make such a big difference.
When we were selling our house two years ago, I found it hard to adapt to a clean and spacious house, but it was definitely worth doing it! Everyone that came through the door really liked the space that I never knew we had. That is why staging your house by showcasing the very best of it is so important to create a good impression.
These are my tips to prepare your house for sale, let’s take a look.
1. De-clutter everything!
Time to depart your favourite dolls, collectable items, holiday souvenirs, family photos, children’s artwork or bulky furniture that always blocks the flow of the house. If possible, hire a self-storage unit to store them safely away, hide them in your attic or ask a helpful friend to store items in their spare room. Alternatively, donate the items to charity if you don’t need it for your next home or throw them away. If you need help de-cluttering, I would recommend you watch Marie Kondo’s tips on how to defeat clutter and discover what sparks joy.
2. Style your home
After de-cluttering, you will probably want to take a look around your house to see if you can style it up. There are many ways to style your home on a budget, for example, you can get yourself a replica Eames DSR chair to style your dining room or refresh your cushions with new fabric covers. Instead of real plants, why not get artificial plants to brighten up your home!
3. Deep clean
Give your house a good clean, especially all the cobwebs on your ceilings and weeds around your garden. To be honest, I would not recommend a professional deep clean for carpets and curtains as many people won’t notice it. I also would not bother with cleaning the oven too. But if you have a stove, do give it a clean before any viewing. Some people recommend brewing coffee before any viewing to give your home a pleasant aroma. Or consider introducing fresh flowers or a single scent across the home either by candle or reed diffuser.
4. Finish your DIY
It is important to finish any unfinished DIY and routine maintenance like painting your fence or washing your tiles etc. A well presented house screams out for a well cared owner and people like things that are well taken care of! Buyers will offer a good price when they see there is little to do to the house. As a buyer, whenever I see a problem that needed fixing, I am mentally reducing the price or moving the prospect to the ‘no’ pile as I am not a DIY person.
5. Painting/Upcycle
Do you have tired looking kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets? Then why not, give them a lick of fresh paint to make it look modern and clean. The room will immediately appear bigger and brighter. Recently, I have painted all the bathroom cabinets on a budget of £50 and it has transformed it into a modern sleek bathroom!
Do remember that buyers are not looking to buy property, in fact, they are looking to buy into a better lifestyle. Hopefully, the tips above will help you or even inspire you to go about it to make your home more sellable.
