Inspiring girls to consider STEM careers: Star Wars to the rescue!

19 December 2017 by Eileen

I told you before how important I think it is to help our daughters consider a different area for their future.

Another great way to get girls involved is by inspiring them with strong female role models. EDF Energy is partnering with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is now live in cinemas launches in UK cinemas today, with inspirational lead female characters such as Rey and Rose.

We were thrilled to receive the EDF Energy Pretty Curious pack, which includes

  • an amazing littleBits Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit so Ms C can show off her STEM skills,
  • and a Pretty Curious Google cardboard headset to watch the 360˚ virtual reality film!

Inspire Girls to pursue STEM

littleBits Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit comes with everything you need to create and control your own Droid. It is very easy for children to put together with the step-by-step in-app instructions. Ms C did require some help from me to secure some items together and to customise the Droid with the stickers.

If you have the kit and were wondering where the instructions are, don’t worry!

Once you have removed all the plastic packaging, you need to download the Droid Inventor app (iTunes & Google Play) onto your smart devices. I have downloaded it on my iPad. Next, you need to sign in with your email address and you are ready to go. Through the in-app instructions, it will show you the items to use and if you have any problems, there is always a help button to troubleshoot.

In the app, children can also challenge themselves to level-up their inventor skills by creating new custom Droids. By accepting the missions and challenges, children can teach their Droid new skills like head spins and self-navigation, and send him on 16+ special Star Wars missions. Ms C has only achieved level 2 so far and she has more to explore. She’s delighted with this kit and has a lot of fun using it.

The Droid is made from good quality materials and will surely be loved by everyone. This also helps encourage children to explore, invent and build! We can’t wait to try out the secret message mission to record and send secret voice messages with our Droid. The kit is available in good toy retailers, online and Amazon.

Will you be joining us to send the message across to inspire the generation of girls to discover the future through STEM? Let our voices be heard! Also do check out some of our STEM experiments: Shiny Penny & Mover Kit.

Disclosure: We received the samples for the purposes of writing this review, however all thoughts and opinions remain our own.

What a great idea, what does STEM stand for please? I’d definitely encourage girls to be comfortable with engineering and electrical skills etc.

Ms C looks a natural controlling that droid. It is a really great piece of kit, isn’t it? My girls are really loving it and I think the #PrettyCurious campaign is wonderful. It’s so important for our girls to knwo all the roles available for them. Mich x

I love the drive on to encourage daughters to follow STEM careers. My Dad always encouraged his girls and each of us has followed an individual STEM path. It’s such a great way to take control of your life.
