Love to learn which mega machine or space rocket broke the world record? Are your children always interested to read about machines and all their associated facts and records? Then these two Record Breakers books are a must for them! Mr K already had the car record breakers book which he loves so much that he wanted these two too add to his collection.
Mega machine is crammed with facts, stats and full-page images of the world’s biggest, fastest and most powerful vehicles, from speedboats to monster trucks! There are 128 pages filled with information that will amaze you. My son was thrilled to read this book and kept telling me what he had found out and learnt.
Did you know the name of the longest ship they ever made? It was called Seawise Giant. It was bombed and sank during the Iran-Iraq war in 1988 but was repaired and sailed until 2004. It then served as a floating oil storage container, but was scrapped in 2010. All the contents of the book are easy to read and understand for my nine year old son.
Space Record Breakers takes all the wonders of space and packages it in digestible, factual form, focusing half on the natural wonders of space and half on the history (and future) of humankind’s exploration. We find the contents very engaging and easy to understand.
I love one of the facts listed in the book on the wackiest animal experimental in space. In 1991, NASA sent over 2,000 moon jellyfish polyps on the shuttle. They were able to grow and bred but instead of bobbing, the jellyfish turned in circles. In space, the crystals of calcium sulphate in the jellyfish’s pockets are not moved by gravity so the jellyfish can’t tell which way is up. Most of the jellyfish born in space did not adjust properly to gravity when they returned to Earth. As jellyfish born in space can’t adjust to gravity, humans born on a long space flight at some future date might well have the same problem. This is such an interesting experiment to learn from.
These two books are packed full of detail and interesting facts that will appeal to many children. They are available to buy from Carlton Books. They also have these titles: Dinosaur Record Breakers, Animal Record Breakers and Car Record Breakers.
Disclosure: I received these books from the publisher for free. However, they have not paid me for this review, and they do not exercise any editorial control over my review or anything else on this site.
