Feng Shui Wallet Tips: What to Keep (and Avoid) for Wealth and Prosperity

4 September 2025 by Eileen

Many people turn to feng shui not only to invite wealth but also to improve relationships, enhance wellbeing, and ward off bad luck. While some dismiss it as mere superstition, others see it as a way of aligning themselves with positive energy. My view? If a practice uplifts you, causes no harm, and may even bring prosperity – why not give it a try? At the very least, you will gain an interesting experience.

Feng Shui Wallet Tips What to Keep (and Avoid) for Wealth and Prosperity

After listening to Taoist fortune tellers and reading Lilian Too’s Personalised Feng Shui Tips, I have gathered practical suggestions you can try. Small, simple changes can help transform your wallet into a powerful magnet for wealth and financial stability. Best of all, you don’t need to spend a fortune to set the right energy in motion.

Things You Should Keep in Your Wallet

  1. A Neat and Tidy Wallet
Your wallet is more than a money holder – it is a reflection of your financial energy. Imagine it as your home: if it is cluttered and messy, the Wealth God (财神) may not be inclined to visit. A clean, organised wallet signals respect for money and invites prosperity. From ShareCorner Facebook page.
  2. An Auspicious Note
Place a small piece of red paper inside your wallet with the phrase “招财进宝”(ushering in wealth and treasures). Red is the most auspicious colour in Chinese culture, symbolising luck and success. Keep it near your cash to boost financial energy. From ShareCorner Facebook page.
  3. A Pinch of Sea Salt
Seal a small amount of sea salt in a plastic bag and tuck it into a hidden compartment. Replace it every 10 days to maintain its cleansing and protective energy.
  4. Grains of Rice
Place 11 or 21 grains of uncooked rice in a small plastic bag. Like salt, they symbolise nourishment and abundance – just remember to refresh them occasionally.
  5. A Bay Leaf with Intention
Write a financial goal or specific sum of money on a fresh bay leaf using a green marker. Place it alongside your banknotes and replace it once the leaf dries out.
  6. Feng Shui Coins (Tip by Lilian Too)
Tie three feng shui coins together with red thread (or red ribbon if you don’t have red thread) and keep them in your wallet. The number three represents heaven, earth, and humanity – a powerful trinity. Avoid four or five coins, as they are not considered lucky, but you may also use six, seven, or eight, which carry auspicious meanings. The red thread is key, as it activates the coins’ energy.

Things You Should Not Keep in Your Wallet

According to Taoist Master Ling Yun’s Instagram page (No. 1 to 5), these items can weaken or disrupt your wealth energy:

  1. Sharp Objects (keys, nail clippers, scissors etc)
They symbolically “cut off” your fortune, leading to unstable finances.
  2. Other People’s Business Cards
Each card carries its owner’s energy. Storing them in your wallet may cause your financial luck to scatter toward others instead of accumulating for yourself.
  3. Damaged or Torn Banknotes
Crumpled or torn money represents damaged fortune. Spend them quickly and keep only neat, crisp notes.
  4. Expired Talismans or Amulets
Once their spiritual energy fades, they may block wealth luck or even attract negative energy instead of protecting you. Replace them promptly.
  5. Storing Your Wallet on a Shoe Cabinet
Shoes symbolise dirt and trampling. Leaving your wallet on a shoe cabinet is like stepping on wealth, suppressing prosperity. Always keep your wallet in a clean, respectful place.
  6. Fold Banknotes
Folding money is seen as disrespectful and may block the flow of abundance. A crumpled or folded note symbolizes that your wallet has no room to welcome more wealth. Keeping your cash neat and organized creates positive energy and shows respect for money, inviting prosperity to flow into your life.
  7. Credit Cards vs. Cash
Credit cards carry a very different energy from cash. While cash represents tangible wealth you already own, credit cards symbolize debt and borrowed money. Keeping too many credit cards in your wallet may invite financial stress and block prosperity. Instead, it is best to limit the number of debt-related cards you carry and make more space for cash, which reflects real abundance.
Tip: Carry more cash than cards to attract stable, lasting wealth.

The Colour of Your Wallet Matters

Even the colour of your wallet can influence your financial luck. According to Taoist Master Ling Yun, these colours should be avoided:

  • Red: Attracts money quickly, but makes it flow out just as fast.
  • Pink: Attracts romance, not wealth – suitable for singles, but not for saving.
  • White: Symbolises emptiness, making it difficult to accumulate money.
  • Light Blue: Represents flowing water – your money may “flow away” instead of staying.

Shape Of Your Wallet

Did you know the shape of your wallet can influence its energy flow? Feng shui experts recommend choosing a rectangular wallet rather than a square one. The longer shape allows your banknotes to lie flat and face you neatly, instead of being folded or crumpled. This simple adjustment not only keeps your money organized but also symbolizes respect for wealth, creating space for more prosperity to flow into your life.

Tip: Always choose a wallet that allows your notes to stay flat—it shows respect for money and invites abundance.

Final Thoughts

By keeping your wallet neat, avoiding inauspicious items, and adding small symbolic enhancers, you can create a welcoming space for wealth to flow. Whether you see feng shui as spiritual practice or cultural tradition, these tips may just shift your money energy in the right direction.

Feng Shui Wallet FAQ

  1. Which wallet colour is best for attracting wealth?
Earth-tone colours like black, brown, gold and deep green are considered the best for wealth accumulation. They symbolise stability, growth, and grounded energy, helping you keep and grow your money.
  2. Is it bad luck to keep receipts in your wallet?
Yes, in feng shui, keeping old receipts represents past spending and clutter. They can block fresh wealth energy from flowing in. Always clear them out to make space for new money.
  3. How often should I replace the symbolic items in my wallet?
Items like sea salt, rice, and bay leaves should be replaced regularly – every 10 to 15 days – to refresh their energy. Coins or auspicious notes can remain longer as long as they stay clean and intact.
  4. Can I give someone a feng shui wallet as a gift?
Absolutely. Gifting a wallet with auspicious items (like feng shui coins or a lucky note) is seen as sharing prosperity and good fortune with your loved ones.
  5. What does it mean if my wallet is always empty?
An empty wallet symbolises emptiness in financial energy. To avoid this, always keep at least one clean note inside, even if it is small, to symbolise ongoing wealth flow.
