What To Consider When Choosing A New Bathroom Suite

13 February 2015 by Eileen

The bathroom is one of the more common renovations in a home. For it’s relatively small size, it can get more than it’s fair share of use by the average family so careful consideration is required when you are considering a new bathroom suite. These are some of the things I would consider if I was redesigning our bathroom.

What To Consider When Choosing A New Bathroom Suite for yourself

Size/Layout

Is the size of the bathroom sufficient for your family’s needs? If you have young children now, there will be a time when they will hog the bathroom more and more so think about your future requirements too. Could you expand the bathroom? For example, if you have an adjoining toilet and bathroom, perhaps they could be combined to create a more spacious room. Could the layout of the room be better optimised? Use graph paper and draw up some designs.

Heating/Lighting

A cold bathroom is off-putting so it is vital that it is adequately heated to ensure it feels welcoming. For our next bathroom, I would love to install a heated towel rail radiator. Along with heating, the lighting of the bathroom will also affect the ambience of the bathroom. If you have a small bathroom, stylish mirrors may help make the room feel less claustrophobic.

Ventilation

If you have fan ventilation installed in your ceiling and you decide to move the bath/shower, then you may consider moving the fan too to ensure your bathroom remains well ventilated. If you don’t have a fan installed, that should be prioritised to reduce the condensation in your bathroom but make sure to choose one according to the size of your room.

Storage

It’s a real bug bear of mine in our current bathroom that we don’t have enough storage. For example, whenever we buy a large pack of toilet roll, we end up storing most of it in the garage because we don’t have enough storage space built into our bathroom. So as you plan your new bathroom, make sure you plan for additional storage if required, whether it’s a small stylish cabinet under the sink, a bathroom mirror cupboard or shelves within the shower cubicle for toiletries.

Budget

It’s important to set yourself a budget and cost everything out. The cheapest bathrooms may be great for the budget but remember that a nice quality bathroom can add value to your home. Also, make sure your finishing touches like taps, toilet roll holder is in the keeping with the rest of your bathroom suite – you wouldn’t put the cheapest tyres on a Ferrari would you?

I can’t wait to start planning our bathroom and we’ve already started choosing something from Bella Bathrooms from their amazing range of bathroom suites. With major projects like these, I think it’s best to involve all the family. Ask everyone for their opinion – what do they like about the current bathroom, what don’t they like about the current bathroom, what would they like to include in a new bathroom, etc. Good luck!
